First the good: the hotel has an A+ location close to Times Square and all it has to offer. Public transportation, activities, plenty of restaurants, etc. are all just a short walk away. Also, the staff that we dealt with were very professional and courteous. In particular, Allison at the front desk could not have been more pleasant!
Unfortunately, the management of this hotel does not display the same level of customer service with the way they nickel-and-dime their customers. The "free continental breakfast" that pops up on their website is not free, it is a package which one must reserve, and it is not included if one reserves a non-refundable rate package. The hotel also adds a mandatory $20 facility fee/night to the reservation, which is not uncommon, but nowhere was it mentioned it would be included when we made the reservation through our credit card rewards program. Front desk staff, to their credit, did remove this when we complained. However, management should think twice and consider if the unpleasant surprises are really worth making your hotel seem marginally cheaper when doing a web search.
Finally, as others have pointed out, the hotel is on a system where the entire building is either running heat or A/C. This is not unusual for a building of this age, but it is something to keep in mind when planning an early spring/late fall stay. Unfortunately during our stay we went from near 80 degrees to below freezing during a 48 hour span, and the lobby was unbearably hot during the warm weather.
