I first saw the Crazy Horse Memorial as a child, probably about 1949 , 1950, 1951, sometime around then. It made an indelible impression on me! At that time there was only a slight visible crevasse on the mountain. There was only timber and mountains visible; no highways, no museums, no restaurants! We met the sculptor who spoke to us about the project, a huge burly man with a beard. Totally impressed! A lot of his kids were running around. It was just his house and studio as I remember.

I vowed to return but so far have not been back so far. I have followed progress on the monument whenever I could find out anything about it. As a child we lived in Wichita, Kansas; now I am in Long Beach, NY where not a lot of attention is paid to "fly over country"! I relish any tidbit of information I am able to read!

Bless the kids who stayed with the project! Crazy Horse will ride again.

Cheers! Elsa Haupt
