Where does one rout an injured pigeon, newborn squirrel, or abandoned turtle in this urban jungle? Manhattan may vaunt every niche marketer but this unique service is a boon for city dwellers faced with a sudden and previously unacknowledged dilemma. Over the past two years, I have brought a starling that was weaving on a median, a fluorescent lighting-stunned sparrow, fledgling pigeons, and some poor avians that were too mutilated to survive. The Fund never requires a donation and the staffers are universally genial and informative. I have learned how hardy pigeons really are, but if they can't fly, they're likely doomed (and vilified enough as it is so I would not want them to be even more vulnerable). The Fund also offers free workshops and I feel that every compassionate individual should know of this hidden treasure. Most well-meaning pedestrians are completely clueless as to what to do to help. Now everyone with a heart knows exactly where to take them and where the rehabilitation is clearly a labor of love. Many thanks Wild Bird Fund for doing your remarkable work.
