Do NOT call HWR! When my mom and family needed support and compassion we turned to HWR. The intake nurse met with us at the hospital after the ER doctor & nurses made the suggestion. I told them that her primary care doctor also suggested hospice. My mother was denied. The intake nurse of course asked required questions. Once she found out she wasn't incontinent her demeanor completely changed: she closed the folder and said it seems she's not ready yet. I then explained that I lived with her and put her on the toilet every 2 hours. NOT READY YET? This is all the information we gave HWR: 1. Her PC doctor suggested hospice, 2. She lost 15 pounds in a month and a half, 3. She refused to eat 4. She was having trouble swallowing , 5. She could not walk without being held up or in a wheelchair 6. She was sleeping all day 7. She was diagnosed through a geriatric review 3 times as Alzheimer's 8. She forgot how to eat, drink, hold a fork, glass: I was spoon feeding her 9. I had been to ER with her nearly every other week for a month because she would hold her neck and chest and say "ouch" 10. She could not converse . The intake nurse stated : AND THIS IS A QUOTE: " she doesn't sound like Alzheimer's : more like vascular dementia, maybe call us in a while." She proceeded to close up her files even though I pleaded with her that we needed help: just some guidance: what can I do to keep my mom comfortable? Out of pain? Am I killing her by not forcing her to take pills? Food? VERY IMPORTANTLY, She did NOT even suggest palliative care. I asked. The next day I called Crossroads. I took my mom to her doctor who stated "if she doesn't qualify for hospice I don't know who does" My beloved mother died at home 3 days later with her family and Crossroads at her side .
