Had a terrible membership cancellation experience....

Had a terrible membership cancellation experience. I had made several attempts at cancelling my membership(I also physically went there to cancel it). I got a verbal confirmation in regards to my cancellation request. 3 weeks later I get charged and recieve an email saying they can't cancel my membership if I don't email them.

It seems like there is a confusion with the channels supporting each experience/task and a lack of an efficient system design. As a customer I expect to be able to cancel a membership online, over the phone or in person since I can create a membership and book a class through these channels.
