The Hippodrome in Byzantine era, the Horse Square in Ottoman times and Sultanahmet Square in Republican times used to be the site of gatherings, festivals, commerce and rebellions. Today an open air museum but was filled with wooden benches when we visited- probably for a function. The obelisk protrude skyward above the crowds.
