Update (7/21/18):
On the second day, management did allow us to move to another room, which was more spacious and not as bad-smelling. She apologized for the staff member from the night before, who did not allow us to switch.

There was still a faint odor to the water in the new room (and I recognize this faint smell is not that uncommon in certain areas), but the overall condition of the room was much better (although I requested a modernized/upated room and did not receive that - it still looked like a time warp) - and it was nowhere near strong enough to fill the entire room for hours on end, as in the previous room. The first room had corrosion in the tub, the tub faucet was pulling away from the wall, and there was rotting drywall next to the tub as well. (They really should not rent that room at all until it's updated.)

I would recommend steering clear of this place. In my opinion it cost about twice what it should have, even for the better room - and no one should have to be in the room we were in initially.

Ways in which this hotel is awful (written 7/18/18):

1) 1970s era ceilings haven't been touched
2) some rooms are updated; others are not but the rates are the same (and in some cases even more for the worse rooms )
3) the bathroom light can only be turned on along with the outside-the-bathroom sink. Got a kid who needs a nightlight? Your whole room will be lit up like daylight and you won't be able to sleep (which is why I'm writing this at 1 AM). Keep it off and the room is so pitch black you'll risk injury in the tight quarters if you get out of bed because there is no good place to put your suitcases.
4) "free wifi" is different from "free internet" and if you're in a "courtyard" room (I.e. Outdoor motel style) you don't get wifi which is a serious misrepresentation of amenities.
5) last and absolutely worst of all is the horrible smell, which is a known problem that they neither warn of nor provide any discount / compensation for. My husband tried to change rooms and was told it's an issue throughout the facility, and that he could not change rooms without paying an additional fee. I'm sensitive enough to odors that I currently have a sore throat /beginnings of a migraine from the bizarre combo of sulfuric water, possibly old cigarette smoke from a bygone era that is lingering in the drywall, maybe some mold, and chemical cleaners used to try to mask the smells. You'll smell worse after your shower than before... So gross.

I'm so disappointed .. There are many awesome places we could have stayed instead for less or equal money. I've waited almost 30 years to get to Stratford for the second time, and we made a seriously bad choice.
