I'm sure it's unpopular to say anything bad about a non-profit animal shelter, but... I've had as many as three dogs and three cats (currently three dogs and two cats). They are all rescues. My first dog was from a no-kill shelter in another state.

Maybe my family is strange, but I tend to be the pet picker-outer. I had "permission" from my wife to get another dog, while she was away. I found a great dog, that would need surgery, and wanted to adopt her. I was told I could not, unless everyone in the family met the dog. I explained how our family was, and even offered to call my wife on her cell. Not good enough. I asked if the dog could be put on "hold", and I was told "no".

Soon after, I told my story to a coworker. Coincidentally, she had recently been there, and wanted to put a dog on hold, and was told, "no". So she came back to see if the dog was still available, and was told it was "on hold" for somebody else. You see what I mean, right?

To make matters more frustrating, I donated a car to Animal Humane that later sold for $800. I'm still glad I did, and this may seem irrelevant, but it did add a little insult to injury. And no, I didn't mention that to them when I was trying to adopt the dog. Not my style.

I'm sure they do good work, but I feel as there are some there, that do not...and that perhaps it is politically incorrect to say anything negative about this organization even if there are things that are not done well.

Oh yeah, I went and got a dog at the East Side Shelter, after being denied the dog at Animal Humane. He is somewhat "special needs" with bad rear leg. We've been heaping love on him for several years now.
