The County could certainly do a LOT that they are ...

The County could certainly do a LOT that they are not doing now. They need to appropriate funds and programs that will support education and spay/neuter. They need to be proactive rather than reactive. They spend so much money running the shelter who spends money killing animals and then take in more animals and kill more animals.. Why don't they fund spay neuter programs so that there are fewer dogs and cats. Educate the public on the importance of pet responsibility. Pet overpopulation is the major problem because people are ignorant and don't have an incentive to spay/neuter. Make licensing fees for both dogs and cats very high if they are not spayed or neutered and then fund low cost spay neuter so it is less expensive for people to spay/neuter than it is to get a high cost license. ENFORCE the law. There are thousands of communities throughout the nation who have implemented programs and laws that have reduced and in some case eliminated the euthanasia of adoptable animals. Call you county legislators and tell them you want considerably more money being directed at preventing the problem so they don't have to spend more money putting a bandaid on the problem.
