Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, who had known each other since primary school, founded their office in Basler Rheinschanze 6 in 1978 after graduating in architecture from ETH Zurich in 1975 and working as an assistant there. In addition to this headquarters, they now have five further branches in London, Hamburg, Madrid, New York City and Hong Kong. The company employs a total of 420 people.
Herzog & de Meuron became internationally known with the renovation of the Tate Gallery of Modern Art in London, the two stadium buildings St. Jakob-Park in Basel and Allianz Arena in Munich, the National Stadium in Beijing the Elbphilharmonie, etc.
