Leah Davies Review of The Manhattan at Times Square ...

I recently stayed here for over week and while the location is A++, the hotel is very run down and the staff could've been better.
Firstly, my room was not ready when I arrived at 9pm that evening, due to the hotel being overbooked. I was given another room and told to move the next day. I moved, which was fine, into a filthy room, that was damaged (air con and phone didn't work), had mold and was dusty. I spoke to the manager, who had an "i don't care" attitude and moved me into another room. I will state, he didn't apologise for the filth and basically just moved me and wiped his hands clean of the situation. The hotel is very busy so I don't think they really care about the state of the rooms, more so just getting people in and out.
My final room was marginally better but still, not good looking. There was mold in the bathroom that I scrubbed away, the sink plug (in built) was removed so it was just a giant hole, and my wallpaper was peeling off.
The bell men, who tended to the bags, were lovely and very helpful and the front desk/check in staff, were pleasant enough but I wouldn't say outstanding. I did not deal with the concierge. The manager on duty did not seem to care and this was purely a job for him.
In addition to this, every morning around 3am, the cleaning staff would move very large bins of towels etc (you could hear wheels rolling and then the large trolleys rolling over minor humps on the ground). This occurred on each level I stayed on (I was in a total of 3 rooms due to the reason above) and it was so loud, it would wake me up. I checked initially to see if it was guests leaving but it wasn't. These bins even were parked in the hotel halls during day hours, which I have never seen before. This was the worst part about the stay because this constantly woke me up. It did eventually move to around 11pm-12pm at the end of my stay but still, if you have small kids, or even just want to sleep, it could be very annoying.
A few things as well:
1) Cleaning staff yell at each other in the morning (not rudely) but they are very loud.
2) Damages in room, including wall dents, loud air con, bathroom damages. Note these down in your room in case of any issues later on.
3) No food room service for those who care or cafe. There is a tiny coffee stand but nothing else. Yes, I am aware it's NYC but this may be important to some people for various reasons.
4) It's a great location; it's just a smidgen out of Times Square but still accessible. Right near trains and close to a lot.
5) The balcony (should your room have one) is a tiny box with high walls (no city view) and very unkept but it was lovely to get fresh air. I did have people throwing things into my balcony.
6) No bed bugs sighted during stay.
Finally, as I write this, I have been double charged by the Manhattan Times Square - for what I assume is a facility fee. I was unaware I need to pay a facility fee of $34 USD a night until I arrived (we don't have this in Australia or other places I have stayed worldwide). While this was fine, I am now finding that I have two charges on my credit card. I have lodged this with them and my bank to get this amended - I will comment on the results.
It's very evident that this hotel is very popular, due to it's location, but with the numbers of price competitive hotels that are much nicer and in the same location, I cannot see this hotel surviving without a face lift. I have stayed in NYC numerous times and at multiple hotels, and I would have to say this was the worst.
I personally wouldn't recommend this hotel and encourage people to shop around for other hotels within the same area.
P.S. I have attached a few photos of the state of the rooms.
