This place is cool to visit any time of year. Highly recommend staying at Shimaya Hotel/Ryokan if you're coming for the Snow Monkeys. Lots of onsens in the town. If you can squeeze an extra day into the area, do it. Easily walkable little town. If you want to save a day on your Rail Pass, you can get here cheap on a Willer Express bus from Tokyo also, then activate your Pass after seeing the Monkeys.
