I came into the ER with severe chest pain. I received an EKG fairly quickly and was told it would be given to a doctor immediately. About an hour and a half later, a doctor greeted me and told me he would order an EKG. I told him I had already had one, and he apologized and said he had been too busy to review it. Not reassuring to hear. A nurse then came in and dressed me in a gown and searched my clothes for drugs....
3 hours later, I get a chest x-ray(without hearing anything about the EKG results). 3 hours after the x-Ray, I saw the doctor again and he told me I have heartburn and am being discharged. I told him I knew it wasn t heartburn, and I was still in horrible pain. He said ok and sent a nurse in to take me out of my room and into a different room, where I sat for over an hour before she brought me discharge papers. I asked her why I was being discharged (as I was under the impression that my doctor was maybe hopefully still looking into my condition) and she said their protocol for chest pain was to make sure I was not having a heart attack, and I obviously wasn t, so no further treatment was required of them.
After I left, I went to St. Thomas s ER. I was assured by the ER doctor UNPROMPTED that the hospital was determined to diagnose and care for me, whether I was having a heart attack or not. After an EKG and echocardiogram, I was quickly diagnosed with pericarditis.
Needless to say, I will never step foot inside Tennova again.
