Allan Flux Review of Asador Casa Julián de Tolosa
Lovely place, and bigger than you think.
Lovely place, and bigger than you think.
We were due to do a driving trip in Northern Spain, so sent a cheeky, slightly optimistic email about 10 days before, and managed to get a reservation for Sunday lunch on route to San Sebastian.
Arrived just as it opened to find a few other diners lurking in the area. The town isn't the prettiest, being industrial in origin, but the scenery on the drive in is lovely.
The restaurant has two dining rooms, the one you may have seen on TV and a more modern one where we sat.
Service is good, informal and relaxed. I could see into the kitchen and it was a picture of calm and order. Fresh ingredients were arriving on Sunday - special mention to the mahoosive mushrooms that are about 20cms tall and diameter. They looked amazing.
We had assorted cured meats and white asparagus as a starter.
It's all about the steak though. All cooked on one small wood fired grill. One large steak shared between 2. I had the portion with the bone in, and it was deliciously tender. We had the red peppers as an accompaniment. Online some people thought these were a bit expensive for what you get, but I thought they were delicious.
Being a bit full by now, we shared a cheesecake, which was more than enough for 2. With a couple of glasses of wine and a beer and a tip, 140. The restaurant was full - on a Sunday lunch service ,with a nice relaxed atmosphere and good service - their English is way better than my Spanish!
