Joel L Review of Best Western Chilworth Manor
My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights over a week...
My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights over a weekend in order to see family members before Christmas.
The hotel was easy to find for our taxi driver; well sign posted from the main road. It's worth noting that the entrance to the car park up the main drive is one way, and the exit is another way.
Check in was quick and easy, staff were polite and helpful.
The room size was smaller than expected (Despite having read other reviews that said the rooms were small) but this is due to the building being an old Edwardian Manor House that probably can't be altered too much. Room commodities in our "Executive" room didn't seem to differ much from a standard hotel room. I'd question the difference when booking and next time may go for a standard room. Decoration was pleasant and neutral. The bathroom was a perfectly good size for our needs. The mattress on the bed was incredibly firm and not good for my wife who currently has a back injury. Neither of us slept particularly well for the whole stay. We did ask for a mattress topper after the first night, and this was provided although it was pretty thin, so we went to the nearby ASDA supercentre to buy another one. This did help a little although we feel as hotel guests this shouldn't have needed to happen. We do however, appreciate that not all mattresses will suit everyone. When discussing this with a few hotel staff, their 'party-line' seemed to be "Unfortunately you can't bring your bed from home with you". This we know, however we feel that perhaps if firm mattresses are bought, then more adequate mattress toppers (Memory foam ones?) should be provided in each room to suit guests. I shall be contacting the hotel manager regarding the mattress, in due course.
The bar area was nicely decorated for Christmas, and really is rather grand. The way the balcony overlooks this area is lovely, and the large Christmas tree was great too.
The food here really brings up my overall rating. Improve the mattresses in the rooms and it would've been 5 stars.
