The name of the park ApenHeul in Dutch means Safe Haven for Monkeys . This is literally true at the park as they roam around freely amontst visitors. There are no cages. They come up close and are friendly. You are however warned not to touch them nor feed them. You are also advised than monkeys will snatch your sandwiches in no time if you are not careful. We were further told that food we consume is poisonous to the monkeys and make them sick. Monkey proof bag, which cannot easily be opened by monkeys, was provided to us at the entrance. This of course was returned on exit. Food and snacks were available at a number of monkey free zones .
At times, we had to look hard at the branches to spot them. It was an interesting experience to discover them, playing on nearby branches. We stopped often enjoying the antics of these small friendly primates. They play all the time and are never in a hurry. I wish we could too!!
There is a separate sections for Gorillas. They too roam freely but on islands of their own. When you go into the park you do not have the feeling that you are at a zoo as you walk amongst them. The planning of the park is excellent to let the visitors enjoy the monkeys without them being caged as at many other zoos.
