There are so many amazing resources at and through the SFPL (more than just books!). Staff are usually friendly and helpful for book suggestions. All of the libraries are well maintained.

For the main library, being in the middle of the Civic center where there is rampant homelessness and drug use, it is going to seep into this beautiful public space. IMO, the comments about that might be helpful for visitors, but it shouldn't impact the review of the library. It's an issue of the city and regardless of it, I still think the library is very well maintained. If there were a lot of bathrooms, it would be incredibly difficult to keep those clean and drug free. Even with what you see in the lobby and out the doors, the children's area is fantastic and events there are great as well.
