Incredible circuit - just experienced 2015 USA F1. Grand Prix, the third year in a row - they handled the awful weather really really well - the site is incredible and I have followed F1 for 40+ years and watched as many circuits collapse in a heap under lesser conditions . . . yet there is one exception . . . and I know they will be de-briefing on the weekend to bring better systems into place for the next "terrible weather" situ. Which may never ever be as bad but . . .
OK, so, once the parking lots got closed (from too much rain), our life got difficult, we were informed we were best to catch the shuttle bus from downtown Austin (convention center) - nice! We needed some help on where we were to stash/park our car in town. It seemed that area of the city got overburdened, so the COTA site could have come alive with parking building options - we were searching blind. From our park we walked to the shuttle, not really a prob, got greeted and treated well as people that had paid for but lost their on-site park . . . NICE! We hopped on a bus, got to the circuit in great time!
HOWEVER! Post race . . . no help at all. We watched Sir Elton for about 45 minutes (totally cool!) and trekked our way to the front gate to ask where the shuttle were leaving for the people that lost their parks due to the rain. The nice COTA staff member pointed and said "across the road" - so away we go, across the road, and . . . there were probably 15+ buses lined up for action in the distance - we were feeling good until we got close. There was a line of people . . . and it stretched back from where we had come from . . . almost back to Sir Elton's stage! Hundred's and hundreds and hundreds of people moving like syrup on a cold day towards the buses. The line snaked right back to turn 12 and back again to the main gate that we had left a quarter of an hour ago. We talked to people that were maybe 300 from the head of the line - they had been waiting almost 3 hours for a ride and were really pissed. We gazed down to the buses and they were appearing to be loaded one by one. Are you kidding????? Why not line up 4 buses with 4 COTA staffers and load 200+ people at once! HOPELESSNESS filled our hearts, with the prospect of having to start at the back of the line we could have joined up by Elton, had we known we were no-longer being looked after as people that had lost their parks. The prospect of a 3 hour people snake ahead of us was beyond understanding - especially as we had seen buses being loaded one at a time. 54 seats at a time. This is third world. The feeling that the circuit no longer gives a toss sunk deep. We would not be home before midnight - hell if it wasn't for the rained out parking lot our trip was only 12 minutes without traffic - probably 40 minutes with circuit traffic.
We had an option very few people had - so we took it. Call our son - come and pick us up! We had to get outside the circuit for that to happen. We grabbed some rickshaw dudes, paid them handsomely to get us to the main gate - which only took 10 minutes - amazing! We then walked up the road (Elroy) to the gas station to wait for the pick-up. We were home in 50 minutes after making the phone call.
COTA: you must look after people AFTER the race that lost their "paid-for" parking as well as before. One feels screwed over at times like that. The bus loading logistics need to change too - what the hell? At least 200 at a time!!!!
Other than that nightmare - the track, the event, the staff - all amazing!!!
