I've been a loyal REI member/customer since 1990 and my last two experiences have forced me to rethink where I buy outdoor clothing and equipment. Today, I thought I would have no issues exchanging a Yeti mug for a smaller size Yeti mug, but the REI staff couldn't find the receipt in their system so they just couldn't do it. I left the mug at customer service while I found the size I wanted and then I watched REI's staff put the mug I tried to return back on the shelf. REI couldn't exchange it but they didn't have a issue reselling it...hmmm. I will be shopping at the smaller shops like Alpine Hut and Second Ascent going forward.
