Our car couldn't start due to " Check Hybrid Syste...

Our car couldn't start due to " Check Hybrid System " few days ago. We then towed to Sunnyvale Toyota and had them diagnosed. We were told to do the recall service to replace some parts n ipm kit, but that they said we needed to replace the 12V battery for $415 plus tax. We told them we will fix it our own as we didn't press on time to need the car immediately. We called several Toyota part dept and the 12v battery runs at $199 and Sunnyvale service charges us about $415 for including installing the battery. What a ripoff to consumers! The next day, the service guy said if we don't let them change the battery, they couldn't run the program n must unplug the assembled part and thus charge us for incomplete service as well as the diagnostic charge of $170. We wonder if they could run the code with our dead battery but how come now they couldn't update the software with a temporary battery they had before. And today they said we can't bring battery to their lot to replace.
We did bring the attention to Toyota for compliant but seems it didn't help much. Today, the assistants manager Simon said they can do it for $285 plus tax and charge the diagnostic fee. We were told by another manager Louie that diagnostic is free if repair is under warranty and their story isn't consistent.
We will wait until Wed to talk to their supervisor since it's Sunday. Basically, we've no choice, no matter what, we've to either being forced either to replace their battery, or pay the extra fee for incomplete job or may be the diagnosed fees. We are truly upset by the service...To us, it's about the integrity of this dealership. Totally unhappy about the service at this time...worse come to worst, my husband and I will file an online complaint to automobile dept, BBB, and do whatever cost to hopefully let other people to be vigilant and stay away to avoid hectic...
