The U.S. Marshals Service is a federal law enforcement agency that has been serving the United States for over two centuries. Established in 1789, the U.S. Marshals and their Deputies have served as the instruments of civil authority by all three branches of the U.S. government.
The primary mission of the U.S. Marshals Service is to protect and serve our nation by apprehending fugitives, protecting federal judges and court personnel, transporting prisoners, managing assets seized from criminal enterprises, and providing security for high-profile events.
With over 5,000 employees nationwide, including more than 3,500 Deputy U.S. Marshals and Criminal Investigators who are responsible for investigating crimes related to fugitive apprehension and asset forfeiture investigations; this agency is one of the most important law enforcement agencies in America.
The history of this agency dates back to President George Washington's appointment of John Marshall as Chief Justice in 1801 when he appointed his brother James Marshall as one of six original marshals under his jurisdiction.
Since then, these brave men and women have played a vital role in maintaining law and order across America's vast territories - from tracking down notorious outlaws like Jesse James to protecting civil rights activists during some of our nation's darkest hours.
Today's modern-day marshals are highly trained professionals who use cutting-edge technology to track down dangerous criminals on a daily basis while also working closely with other federal agencies such as Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Bureau Of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms And Explosives (ATF) among others.
One area where USMS has excelled is its Fugitive Task Force program which was established in 1980s with an aim to bring together local state police departments with USMS deputies so that they could work together on cases involving violent offenders or those who pose a significant threat to public safety.
This program has been highly successful since its inception resulting in thousands upon thousands arrests made every year across America’s cities which would not have been possible without this collaboration between different levels government agencies working together towards common goal – keeping citizens safe from harm’s way!
Another area where USMS has made significant strides is its Asset Forfeiture Program which allows them seize assets acquired through illegal means such as drug trafficking or money laundering activities thereby depriving criminals access ill-gotten gains while also providing funds needed support various programs aimed at reducing crime rates across country!
