The good thing about this cafe is because it has a sophisticated vibe and is right inside the South Melbourne Market. I had the prosciutto salad and it was citrusy, fresh and delicious. I really like the way they serve tap water, with mint and cucumber. It makes it super aromatic.

Always visit Eugene and the team for a decent lunch. My favourites include the rolls, hotcakes and salmon squeak. The coffee is great and the managers keep the place running smoothly. Highly recommended for a clean lunch.
That chicken roll. Something to die for. Perfectly cooked. To call it juicy is an understatement. Do yourself a favour and try it!
Ordered a cappucino came out cold. Ordered another asking it to be hot as it wasn't the first time, this time they burn the beans. Waitress very rude.
A weekly treat, the food is consistently delicious. I'm not particularly adventurous trying new dishes but this place is an exception with their specials and I've always been impressed.
Breakfast was absolutely beautiful just a little pricey
Great spot for weekend breakfast if you love that urban buzz of people and trade and culture going on all around you. Excellent outdoor seating. Great service. Great food. Great coffee. Might make this a regular stop-in, I reckon.
Another fine food store at South Melbourne Market - great for a healthy breakfast or an indulgent treat - yum.
Good coffee, decent breakfast, place does get busy and a bit loud so be aware
The best restaurant at South Melbourne Market! Great coffee, Amazing food and wonderful staff!
One of our breakfast go to cafes. Salads and roast rolls are delicious too.
Finally made it to proper & son. I visit the market on weekly basis and never thought of eating there. Aussie breakfast with a bit of a twist, check the specials for the week. Salads might need a bit of a dressing. But super friendly and accommodating staff!
Great vibe and food is fairly yummy. Meal sizes are a little small and no X factor. Worth going to for breakfast but probably skip the lunch.
Unfortunately due to lock down, the menu is condensed at the moment but usually, they have 3-4 different kind of salads and they are always tasty and have good varieties.
Selections of home made desserts are also great for afternoon tea on the week end.
Highly recommended cafe.
The lunch rolls are awesome. Corned Beef and Mustard reminded me of New York lunches from days gone by.
Average. I don't understand the hype to be honest. Everything photographs nicely but the truth is that the coffee is only just passable and the breakfast dishes themselves are far too expensive for the basic ingredients used. The over cooked poached eggs topped off what was a forgettable morning...
The hamburger is delicious~ the roast chicken or beef inside is quite soft and tender, it is worth a try!
My favourite cafe in the market. My family know this is the place to take me if the want to treat me
Had the Wagyu brisket sandwhich which is to die for! Salty, hearty and full of flavour. Great coffee too. The chicken sandwich is also amazing.
Scrambled eggs were so watery. The entire plate had yellow water on it. Staff weren't very friendly...
Enjoyable brunch on Saturday, colourful salads, friendly service.
The girl that was taking my order rolled her eyes on me, super rude attitude considering I had a baby in the pram and couldn t get through to pay because a bunch of ppl were standing on my way reading the menu, she wouldn t even ask them to move for me. I should have cancelled the order because the coffee that got served to me tasted absolutely putrid. Rude attitude + horrible coffee = never again!
When a place serves you a jug of water with cucumber and mint, you know you are about to experience a fusion of ingredients & flavours. The simple salad was made interesting by combining Prosciutto, apricot, fennel, red cabbage, celery and mint. The plunger chai latte was made with proper tea. Will definitely make more pit stops here during my market shopping trips.
Really poor customer service. Waitresses very rude. Food not great. All-round very disappointing experience.
Lovely casual space. Good food and a great environment.
Outstanding. Great soy flat white, and super yummy chia fruit cocunut thingie in a glass.. I ll be back..
Best salads in Melbourne. Great service, great coffee!
Some really good and freshly made food. Service great. A favorite of mine.
One of the best chicken burgers I've had! Always coming back for more.
The flourless chocolate cake is sublime and the coffee fantastic
I thought I'd give them a 5-star. Love the vibe here and the overall decor. Bright and airy, very casual and makes me feel relax. Service is prompt, the waitress is cool and the food is great. The coffee is from Toby estate and for those who are in for a quick bite, they have plenty of takeaway pastries to choose from. Definitely recommend you to come here for a coffee or brunch!
Great for breakfast - dishes are very thoughtful and a little bit 'fancy'. Coffee is also good - service can be slow in busy times - but staff are friendly and helpful.
Great service, Above and beyond! And super fresh healthy food.
Terrible service. It's Easter Saturday and the waitress that served us was so grumpy and rude. Didn't want to work on public holiday I guess.
Always get great service. Always get a great Feed. Coffee is always full flavoured and hot. If you want something that tastes good and is healthy. Give them a go.
Always great food and service. The seasonal menu usually on point, and their lunch salads delicious. Always a win coming here. Reasonable prices.
Sensational food- try the roast chicken roll, delicious and consistent the last hmm .. 10 times? Also Best coffee in the market now- giving Padre a run for their money.. the hip Clement coffee tends to promote a fruitier and more bitter coffee style (which some do go for) making you long for those nutty, toasty, choc and savoury flavours that got you addicted to coffee in the first place. The barista guy absolutely knows what he's doing - go when ya see he's on the machine ;)
Fancy cafe/restaurant in the middle of South Melbourne market
If ever you are going to the South Melbourne Market you must check this place out. Always a really great vibe, very friendly staff and the food is Epic!! P.s. make sure you try the Roast Chicken roll - they are life changing!!!
Always so good. Food is fresh and consistently awesome.
The scrambled eggs on toast are a show stealer. Proper toast, eggs and butter!! Market rolls are addictive, we have been eating them for years. Thanks Eugene and team! Keep it all up!
Goes down as one of the best brekkies I have ever had. Crafted, not made. Every element balanced and beautifully presented. Staff great. Highly recommended!
Pretty good food, but WAY over priced for what it is.
Limited menu but what they have is very good. Can be very busy so not always a seat available. My favourite is the salmon.
Don t waste time with dim sims and burritos at the stalls in the front of the market. Venture around the corner and you ll find this Gem.. excellent service and food is awesome.. especially the chicken rolls, the best you ll ever eat.. beware, they are addictive!!
Staff were rude and unwelcoming. Won't be back again.
What a great place for a quick meal! You get there by entering the food hall from the market. They have table service. Are super friendly and offer a lot of options for food.
If you re on the Keto diet, they have a great Avocado salad, will bring cream for your coffee (which is difficult in Australia), and you can have a nice grilled halloumi cheese side. I strongly recommend this awesome place!!!
Our favourite breakfast venue at the South Melbourne Market.
Beautiful breakfast, poor coffee and abrupt waitress.
For a venue that is connected to South Melbourne Markets, Proper & Son does a surprisingly great job of managing what must be one of the busiest spots in Melbourne.
Dishes were simple, plated well and delicious. Coffee was made well, and staff were super friendly once they got the time to serve you.
Outstanding breakfast and coffee. A busy and pumping little business. They have invested heavily in setting up this cafe and it shows. Highly recommended with a thoughtfully prepared menu. Go for it! I go here every week.
Saturday lunchtime and the South Melbourne Market is a little quieter than usual so we had to opportunity to eat in at Proper & Son. Glad we tried it: Jane served us the Roast Chicken Brioche Roll with Cranberry Stuffing and we followed that with tea and a shared (warmed) Raspberry Muffin. Couldn't be happier! Oh, and the free table water with a slice of cucumber and a little mint was not cold but it was surprisingly refreshing; appreciated.
Always have a great time here. Staff are really friendly. They change up what they have on offer in terms of salads and desserts quite often which makes every visit different. The roast chicken roll is a must try. The coffee here is also fantastic, during summer I would opt for one of their homemade sodas. Staff always friendly & open kitchen give great market vibe. Anyone visiting the South Melbourne Market should pay a visit even if it's just for a coffee.
A surprised find and in a very positive way! The breakfast set and coffee that we had ordered was really good! The portion was generous for the price, and even when we are seated in the general public area, they provided table service.
Really impressed with the food here. Perfect brunch venue, with fresh ingredients and presented well. The pea fritters and bacon with soft egg roll were absolutely heavenly. Service is friendly and they deliver to you even when sitting outside in the food hall. Highly recommended!
Undrinkable coffee, disorganized service and questionable kitchen hygiene practices
Nice autumn special mushroom breakfast with scrambled eggs and a cup of latte.
Located in South Melbourne Market food court with its own seating area. Very busy before 9am mostly affluent baby boomers treating themselves coffee and breakfast after shopping The open kitchen with 5 or more and a bunch of hovering smiling waitresses. Efficient operation, coffee and meals promptly tabled. My Marketeer bun of real diced chucks of bacon, flipped mini omelette and condiments is a taste sensation. Cafe latte milky and good. Extra shot next time. The place is now full at 9am. Will return.
Got the takeaway roast chicken and stuffing roll. Chicken was tender and delicious. Appreciated that they season the salad leaves to order, nice attention to detail. Yum!
