Founded in 1978 by Don and Deyon Stephens, Mercy Ships has been providing hope and healing to those who need it most for over 40 years. In addition to providing surgical services on board the Africa Mercy, Mercy Ships also works with local healthcare providers in each country they visit. This helps build capacity within local healthcare systems so that they can better serve their communities long after Mercy Ships has left.
Since its inception, Mercy Ships has provided free surgeries for more than 2.7 million people in need. These surgeries include cleft lip and palate repairs, tumor removals, orthopedic procedures and more.
But providing free surgeries is just one part of what Mercy Ships does. The organization also provides training programs for local healthcare workers so that they can improve their skills and knowledge. This helps ensure that sustainable change happens long after Mercy Ships has left a country.
