The Congregation of Sisters of Loretto & Loretto Co-members is a community that has been working for justice and acting for peace since 1812. The community comprises women and men who share the mission of the congregation, which is to serve God by serving others. The Loretto Community has a rich history that spans over two centuries, and its legacy continues to inspire people around the world.
The Loretto Community's mission is rooted in the Gospel values of love, compassion, justice, and peace. The community believes that every person is created in God's image and deserves dignity, respect, and equal opportunities. Therefore, they work tirelessly to promote social justice by advocating for human rights, economic equality, environmental sustainability, racial equity, gender equality, LGBTQ+ rights among other issues.
One of the most significant achievements of the Loretto Community was their involvement in the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. Many sisters participated in protests against segregation laws and worked alongside African American activists such as Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks among others. They also established schools for African American children who were denied access to education due to segregation laws.
