Loretto Community: A Legacy of Justice and Peace
The Congregation of Sisters of Loretto & Loretto Co-members is a community that has been working for justice and acting for peace since 1812. The community comprises women and men who share the mission of the congregation, which is to serve God by serving others. The Loretto Community has a rich history that spans over two centuries, and its legacy continues to inspire people around the world.
The Loretto Community's mission is rooted in the Gospel values of love, compassion, justice, and peace. The community believes that every person is created in God's image and deserves dignity, respect, and equal opportunities. Therefore, they work tirelessly to promote social justice by advocating for human rights, economic equality, environmental sustainability, racial equity, gender equality, LGBTQ+ rights among other issues.
One of the most significant achievements of the Loretto Community was their involvement in the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. Many sisters participated in protests against segregation laws and worked alongside African American activists such as Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks among others. They also established schools for African American children who were denied access to education due to segregation laws.
The Loretto Community also played a crucial role in promoting environmental sustainability long before it became a mainstream issue. In 1975 they founded Earthworks which later became Kentucky Resources Council (KRC), an organization dedicated to protecting Kentucky's environment from pollution caused by mining industries among other activities.
Today the Loretto Community continues its legacy through various initiatives such as education programs on social justice issues; advocacy campaigns on climate change; support for refugees; providing affordable housing; promoting interfaith dialogue among others.
Lorettos' commitment to social justice extends beyond their local communities as they have established partnerships with organizations worldwide such as Maryknoll Sisters (USA), Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) among others. These partnerships have enabled them to work on global issues such as human trafficking, refugee crises, and climate change.
The Loretto Community's commitment to social justice is also reflected in their lifestyle. They live a simple life that is grounded in prayer, community living, and service to others. They believe that by living simply, they can reduce their impact on the environment and promote economic equality.
In conclusion, the Loretto Community is a remarkable organization that has been working for justice and acting for peace for over two centuries. Their legacy continues to inspire people around the world to work towards creating a more just and peaceful society. The community's commitment to social justice is evident in their advocacy campaigns, education programs, partnerships with other organizations worldwide among other initiatives. By living simply and serving others, they are making a significant impact on society while promoting environmental sustainability and economic equality.
