The Polish Academy of Sciences is a state scientific institution founded in 1952 in Warsaw. We are a corporation of scientists - the Academy consists of national members (real and correspondents) and foreign members. The maximum number of national members is 350. Members of the Academy are selected by the General Assembly of the Polish Academy of Sciences from among scientists who stand out with special achievements and authority in the scientific community.

Science - just like a democratic society - can develop in conditions that guarantee freedom of speech, the possibility of discussion and exchange of thoughts, an open attitude to new ideas, taking into account different reasons.

The traditions of academies - institutions grouping scientists, people who are curious about the world, seeking "truth, goodness and beauty" go back to deep antiquity (Akademosa grove - Platonic Academy). After the break in the "dark ages" of the early Middle Ages, they were renewed in a time of the reappearance of intellectuals and the rise of universities. It is worth emphasizing - in the area of the emergence of these institutions, also known as academies, the European civilization was born, with time encompassing ever wider regions of the world. The traditions of modern academies date back to the "Age of Reason" and the Age of Enlightenment. "Enlightened European rulers (in France, Prussia, Russia), wishing to be seen as patrons of sciences and scholars, founded science academies. The progress of knowledge was to be a factor in the economic development of the nation, and achievements research - bring international prestige to rulers and states.

In Poland, the ideas of creating scientific communities were extremely vital (Krakow University, numerous universities of the Golden Age). Especially, however, in the nineteenth-century Poland deprived of statehood, where in 1800, inspired by the philosophy of the Enlightenment, the first - of the nature of a national academy of sciences - the Warsaw Society of Friends of Sciences grew, which flourished under the leadership of Stanis aw Staszic in the times of the Duchy of Warsaw and the Congress Kingdom. He was followed by other academic societies, including the Krakow Scientific Society, established in 1815 and transformed in 1872 into the Academy of Learning (from 1918 - into the Polish Academy of Learning - PAU). The aspirations to modernize the organization of scientific life and research also found expression at the turn of the 1920s and 1930s, when the Warsaw Scientific Society (TNW) - heirs of the Society of the Friends of Sciences, was launching projects to create a national academy of science based in Warsaw. The Warsaw Scientific Society returned to the idea of a nationwide academy of sciences in conspiratorial deliberations from the occupation period.
