Brio energy

Uneducated and didn't do their research on the company they contracted out with.
First, they were misinformed on their tax knowledge. I guess that is my fault for not looking into it for myself but I figured I could trust what they said. Also, I was told that I would have solar installed in a couple weeks.
Guess what? It's five months later and no solar.

Update: they tried to make things right. They admitted their mistake of using a poor solar company which is really the reason for the orignal review. They were good to work with.

I usually never engage a door-to-door sales person in anything beyond "I'm not interested," but since I was considering having solar panels installed, I let the Brio rep in. The door-to-door guy set up an appointment with one of their sales reps. The sales rep was very friendly, but I have a couple of major concerns.

He called the tax credits "rebates" and explained how we could use the rebates as down payment on the project. More than once he said we'd get a check from the government on this. The tax credits are not only not rebates, they are not refundable credits. In other words, at the end of the year, if you still owed the feds $1,000 in federal income tax, and your solar tax credit was $5,000, your remaining tax owed would be reduced to $0, and the remaining credit of $4,000 would roll into the next tax year. You get no check for this credit. You would have to plan to pay less in taxes (maybe adjusting your W-4) and budget those savings into the project. In my state (Utah) the state tax credit likewise is not a refundable credit, so there is no check to be had from the government on this. I mean, even if I reduced my federal income tax withholding to $0, it would take me three tax years to claim the full amount of the credit. The sales rep either misled me or didn't know what he was talking about.

The sales rep got our permission to run a credit check. As he explained it, this was only a preliminary check to see if we were likely to qualify before moving on. We never agreed to open a line of credit. In fact he never asked us if we wanted to open a line of credit up. Yet, about thee weeks after his visit, after telling him we were not moving forward with Brio at that point, we get a letter from the finances company Brio uses (Green Sky) telling us that our line of $28,000 of credit is now approved, open, and available for use. I canceled the credit account the next business day. Green Sky was very helpful in closing this (I assume; I haven't received the confirmation of closure letter yet), but Brio was horrible with this. Again, it seems to be dishonesty or incompetence on the Brio sale's rep''s part.

I would never recommend these folks to anyone. I don't trust them. I'd give them a zero if I could.

BEWARE- We had a young man who came to our neighborhood door to door. We scheduled an appointment to learn more about solar. Of course we planned on talking to a few different companies for bids. When the salesman came (30 minutes late). He talked to us. I had given them some details about our power usage. It sounded good and he encouraged us to see if we could "pre-qualify" for a loan. We were "pre-qualified."They called a few days later to see if they could set up a "site evaluation." Our salesman thought there was a chance they could add a few more solar panels. He assured us that we could cancel at anytime. The day after the site visit, I received an email saying that I owed over 5,000.00. We called to tell them we have not made an agreement to go with them. We called the finance company. The charge had not been posted and we closed the account. Apparently the transaction was pending and was posted the day after we closed it. We have made several attempts to contact Brio. We have been told we must speak to the salesman who won't return our calls. The finance company is also trying to contact them to resolve this. They say they have called and emailed with no response either. BUYER BEWARE!

UPDATE: With the help of Brio Energy, we were able to receive a full reversal of the charges. I appreciate the help they gave me in working with Centrair and Green Sky Finance. Note to self: read everything before you sign. I should know better, even if it's a fourteen page contract. Don't feel pressured or in a hurry to sign.

About a month ago I had a young man knock on my door from Brio Energy. I don't normally listen to door-to-door salesman very much but I have been interested in solar energy and learning more about it. So I agreed to have a free consult. I was very impressed with the salesman that came for the consult. He was very knowledgable about solar. After looking at a few other solar companies I went with Brio Energy because their price was the best and I had a great experience from first contact all the way through having my solar system turned on.

I had a gentleman from Brio knock on my door last week about going green and saving the earth for our children. He was very informative and passionate about solar and educated me in detail about the incentives the government has to offer. I did not know anything about solar since its new to San Antonio. Im looking forward to getting started with the solar revolution. Thanks Martin for opening my eyes!
