Great shows. Extremely talented performers who shine in varying roles from show to show. How someone can go from playing Robert in Bridges of Madison County to playing Donkey in Shrek, and killing it in both roles, is absolutely amazing. Beautiful venues. Friendly staff. Reasonable prices. A superb experience in every way. They even "edited" the O in the "Love" sign by the fountain across the street in honor of everyone's favorite Ogre! :-)

Barter is very fun. I have always enjoyed seeing plays and musical groups. The stage is transformed into magical scenes. The Hunch Back of Notre Dame was amazing when I saw it, so was Tarzan. I didn't really enjoy Sherlock Holmes and the American problem, but plays are interpreted different by each person who sees them.

Simply a must see experience! It's so worth the drive. Every performance, be it on the main stage or the 2nd stage, they are phenomenal! Everyone is so polite and gracious from the parking attendant, will call to the ushers. Thank you for this wonderful experience!

Always a first class performance and fabulous experience! Several years ago, we started a new tradition of going to the Barter Theatre on Christmas Eve. This is part of my gifts to my family. We ALL look forward to it every year and they NEVER disappoint! Incredible performances, fabulous atmosphere, fun for the entire family. Even my teenagers love it! Thankful to the Barter for always adding to my Christmas festivities!!

I've been attending plays at the Barter for twenty years, literally almost my entire life, and I'll continue to do so as long as it exists. The casts are almost always wonderful, with a wide variety of show types, and the very neat and innovative Stage II, where the plays happen literally feet in front of you. The pricing is reasonable, especially if you purchase a ticket package in advanced for the next season. Definitely get there early for your play, parking is very competitive. I'll always recommend the Barter.

Barter Theatre is a shining gem in our quirky, artsy town. There s a reason that world renowned artists make their home in our Appalachian town-and it started back in 1933 with the founding of Barter Theatre. These are not community plays-we are talking Broadway quality but with accessibility, affordability and a feeling of home and belonging. Whether it s a musical, a drama, or even music in the winter, Barter Theatre is a must experience for anyone visiting Abingdon.

The acting is first rate, and the setting is beautiful. Professional theater for less than half of what you would pay in a big city, and some of the actors from here have gone on to the big time. The world premiere of "Madame Buttermilk" was particularly funny!

Outstanding Theater. Very well maintained and the staff assists keeping it that way. The gift shop is well appointed and well organized. The wine bar has a nice selection of good wine. Soft drinks and bottles of water are also available. The performers are outstanding. Will attend again.

Barter Theatre: The Nation's Longest Running Professional Theatre

Barter Theatre is a professional theatre company located in Abingdon, Virginia. It was founded in 1933 during the Great Depression by Robert Porterfield, who had a vision of creating a theatre where people could trade goods and services for admission. This unique concept gave birth to the name "Barter Theatre," which has become synonymous with quality productions and exceptional performances.

Today, Barter Theatre is recognized as one of the premier regional theatres in the United States. It produces more than 25 musicals, plays, and live band showcase performances year-round. The company has two stages - the Gilliam Stage and the Smith Stage - both of which are equipped with state-of-the-art lighting and sound systems.

The Gilliam Stage is named after Richard H. Gilliam Jr., who was a longtime supporter of Barter Theatre. It seats up to 506 people and features an orchestra pit that can accommodate up to 20 musicians. The Smith Stage is named after Harry W. Smith Jr., who was also a major contributor to Barter Theatre over many years. It seats up to 167 people and provides an intimate setting for smaller productions.

One of the things that sets Barter Theatre apart from other theatre companies is its commitment to education and outreach programs for young people in its community. These programs include summer camps, workshops, internships, school tours, and special events designed to introduce children to the world of theatre.

In addition to its regular season productions, Barter Theatre also hosts special events throughout the year such as concerts by nationally known recording artists like Marty Stuart or Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder; comedy shows featuring well-known comedians like Jeff Foxworthy or Bill Engvall; holiday shows like A Christmas Carol or Miracle on 34th Street; as well as other special events such as film screenings or lectures by guest speakers.

Barter's success can be attributed not only to its talented actors but also its dedicated staff members who work tirelessly behind-the-scenes on everything from set design & construction through marketing & promotion efforts aimed at attracting new audiences while retaining loyal patrons alike!

If you're looking for an unforgettable theatrical experience that combines top-notch talent with innovative staging techniques then look no further than Barter Theater! With over eight decades worth of experience producing some truly remarkable shows it's easy see why this venue remains one America's most beloved cultural institutions today!
