I have been fortunate to visit Alcatraz Island twice (and hope additional visits in the future). Each visit was similar but unique. The ferry ride to the island is nice and provided great views of the city and bay. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The first visit included hearing a former prisoner speak about his life and his stay on the island. The second visit included an author who lived on the island when she was a kid. Her father was a guard.

Once on the island, take your time and explore. There are great views and many areas of the island to see. The foliage is beautiful. The free audio tour, which is available in many languages, provided a lot of information. The audio tour is educations and gives many insights into the prisoner s time at the facility as well as the guards life on the island.

The National Park Service strongly recommends making advanced ticket reservations. We purchased our tickets approximately 90 days in advance. This eliminated the need to wait in line to purchase tickets and allowed us to schedule the specific day and time we wanted to visit during our trip. The ticket price includes the ferry transportation (provided by Alcatraz Cruises) and your time on the island.

The boat ride gives your a view of the bay, the city and Alcatraz. We had an amazing weather so our picture were perfect. Try to bring an extra layer of clothing as it can get a little colder than the city. The prison history made you realize what the inmates had to live with. Don't miss this trip if you do not go to SFO too often.

An educational and historic tour. The sights to and from the island are beautiful! Highly recommend making time for this experience during your next trip to San Francisco. The line to board the ferry moves quickly and the staff are friendly. Book in advance so you don't miss out!

The boat ride was nice. The audio tour of the cell house was the best part. Most of the buildings are dilapidated. The birds have taken over the island. The park rangers post the count of each bird and there are close to 5000 birds on the small island. The smell is horrible and the poo is everywhere. I really can t believe they haven t addressed this. I would not recommend this trip. Probably other ways to spend time in San Fran.

Is a must if you are in the area. Ths people are very welcoming and nice. Boat ride is smooth and at the island they have things organized very well from the tour guide to getting back on the boat. GREAT TRIP

The ferry ride takes about 10-15 minutes. You get great views of the island and the city. Alcatraz Island was a great experience and I highly recommend for anyone in the area. I was hoping more of the buildings with be available to tour but that may be an option on the more expensive ticket. Overall, it was very cool seeing this part of history. Plenty of information to take in during the audio tour of the cell house. Plenty of great views and pics too.

Very well done. The purchasing process was easy, there are signs and staff directing you where to go, the ride over the water was very enjoyable and pleasant. You get to see the city, the island, the Golden Gate Bridge and Bay bridge. There is food available to purchase on the boat, as well as seating and viewing platforms. The views are amazing and the time on Alcatraz was spectacular. Highly recommend.

Loved this! We had so much fun! Beautiful cruise over to the island . Tickets were easy to purchase and use. Such an eerie feeling being in the prison. The tour was well put together. Memories that will last a lifetime.

It was a good ride. The prison itself is a little hard to take in but overall experience was great. The lines are long but the scenery is amazing from bay bridge to Golden Gate Bridge
