Poor shopping experience at Leevers Supermarket

My shopping experience ended poorly at the check-out counter at Leevers Supermarket on 424 2nd Ave NE, Valley City, ND 58072.

Upon arriving at the counter and placing my items onto the conveyor belt for check-out, the cashier failed to use the rollers to bring the items closer to the sensor. She had to lean over to grab the items and it was not communicated that the conveyor belt was not working for customers.

After ringing up all of the items with the correct price, she announced the total cost as $41.26 USD. I began using my credit card on the card reader at the check-out and searched for a stylus to sign the transaction for my bank. Unfortunately, there was none at the check-out and the cashier began to insist on using my fingers to sign the transaction. Displeased at the attitude and reception of the cashier, I requested to cancel the transaction to use a different form of payment.

Unfortunately, the cashier responded that it was not possible to back-out of the transaction. Basically, after a phone call and storewide call for assistance, I was told my only recourse was to be forced into the transaction because the [Cancel] button was unable to remove the customer from the transaction. The cashier was unable to cancel the transaction from her terminal and the managers could not assist in this matter. Upon requesting a stylus to apply a proper signature that would be acceptable to the bank, the manager searched behind and found a metal tipped pen. Unfortunately, the card reader was not able to apply the signature from the metal tipped pen as it could not sense it on the screen.

Once again, I asked if I could leave my selections at the store and not make any purchases simply to avoid the trouble and the manager declined. She told me I must finish the transaction and pay money from the credit card. When I asked if I could use a debit card instead she told me it was not possible at this point in the transaction. She told me once the credit card was used in the card reader there is no backing out of the transaction.

I asked if it was possible to get a refund after processing the transaction and the manager complied at the self-service counter with the lottery tickets and tobacco products. She presented a working stylus from the card reader at the terminal and refunded back the full purchase. She proceeded to process the transaction with the debit card and presented the receipt from the purchase. I asked when can the broken card reader be repaired for the future and there was no clear answer. From my perception it appeared that the manager wanted to dodge the responsibility for the card reader. I asked how can we provide customer feedback for our shopping experience at the supermarket and she replied to visit their website.

I am writing this review to inform any future shoppers to ask many questions to look ahead before making your purchase as there will be not be any indication you have the ability to back away.

I was unpleasantly surprised by the poor set of options and choices as well as the inflexibility of the Leevers Supermarket to provide freedom to the customer if they are uncomfortable.

Terrible shopping experience.
