About Young composers project
The Young Composers Project (YCP) is a community of young creative music-makers in the West-Midlands UK. Based at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, composers Kirsty Devaney and Joe Cutler set up YCP to provide a supportive network where young people can meet and work closely with musicians and composers to have their music performed live!
Who is YCP for?
The Young Composers Project is for anyone aged between 14-25 who has an interest in composing music. Whether you are just starting out or have been composing for years, YCP provides a platform for you to develop your skills and showcase your talent.
What does YCP offer?
YCP offers a range of opportunities for young composers including workshops, masterclasses, performances, commissions and collaborations. The project aims to provide support at every stage of the composition process from initial ideas through to performance.
Workshops
YCP runs regular workshops throughout the year covering a range of topics such as orchestration, harmony, rhythm and melody. These workshops are led by experienced composers who provide guidance on how to develop your skills as a composer.
Masterclasses
In addition to workshops, YCP also runs masterclasses where participants can receive feedback on their compositions from professional musicians. This provides an opportunity for young composers to gain valuable insights into how their music can be improved.
Performances
One of the key aims of YCP is to provide opportunities for young composers to have their music performed live. The project works closely with professional musicians who perform new works by emerging composers at concerts throughout the year.
Commissions
YCP also offers commissioning opportunities where participants can create new works specifically tailored for particular ensembles or performers. This provides an opportunity for young composers to work closely with professional musicians and gain experience in writing music that will be performed publicly.
Collaborations
Finally, YCP encourages collaboration between its members by providing opportunities for them to work together on new compositions. This not only helps to develop their skills as composers but also provides a supportive network where they can share ideas and learn from each other.
Why join YCP?
Joining YCP provides young composers with a range of benefits including:
- Access to professional musicians who can provide guidance and feedback on your compositions
- Opportunities to have your music performed live in front of an audience
- Commissioning opportunities that allow you to create new works for specific ensembles or performers
- Collaboration opportunities with other young composers
In addition, YCP provides a supportive community where young people can meet like-minded individuals who share their passion for composing music.
