The cause outweighs one douche. Yes, like one of the other reviews I too was confronted with a similar person acting very rude.
But I decided to go towards the back and found an older gentlemen fixing bicycles. He seemed to be orchestrating the whole group volunteering in the back. He asked if I needed help and I told him my troubles with my bicycle. He helped me that time and every single time since. Whether I needed a bracket for a vintage rack or a Positron shifter wire he always helped.
Now for the second year in a row my gf and I donated at different times of the year to working bikes. This is a great place to get things at a lower price (used) and help a cause.

I had a great experience here. Keke helped me pick out my very first road bike and a year later I brought it in for some maintenance and I was pleasantly surprised to find her still working there. She was just as kind and gentle as she was the first time, especially with me being a beginner when it comes to road bikes. I recommend this organization when it comes to purchasing a new bike or just getting some maintenance done.

No males allowed on Thursdays!

No males allowed on Thursdays!

They ask for volunteers to help fix old bikes which they then sell. I know how to fix bikes so I showed up. The employees (all male) firmly turned me away, saying Thursdays are for females and trans people only. Never in my life have I been turned away from a volunteer position, much less one where I bring specialized skills. I suppose they'd rather keep the women, quasi-women and pseudomen to themselves.

But hey, they sell used bike bottles for a dollar, so one extra star for that.

This place use to be a nice place to get your bike fixed but not as of lately I walked In for a simple repair which I was told would take a week besides that the mechanic gave me a attitude for not wanting more work done like he suggested at which I said no thank you but he disliked I ended up taking my bike to a bike shop called irvs on 18th street and it was fixed the same day for half the price might I add won't be going back to working bikes.

I believe in recycling!! Working bikes donate bikes to some countries were folks has no access to proper transportations. I admire their work. So i buy my bike here to use for homecare job in downtown. I believe as Physical therapist that i will promote wellness, less carbon foot print. Minimizing use if gas, metals, and other stuff that pollutes the might help this planet.
Also, cardio exercise with bikes helps improve overall being!!

I bought my bike here two years ago, and I have used it almost every day since. I couldn't have found a better bike for less money anywhere else in the city, and I love knowing my purchase will fund their wonderful mission to bring bikes to deserving people all over the city.

Bought a sweet "urban assault ride" bike there recently. The selection of bicycles is outrageously amazing, the prices are so affordable and the staff is incredibly helpful.

Kiki and Patrick were incredibly patient, kind and fantastic in helping me with my selection and answering all of my questions. Absolutely wonderful people.

Working bikes is a true community of people working together to provide for our city. We might live in a big city but it feels like a sort of mechanical, creaky home away from home in there. LONG LIVE WORKING BIKES!

First time going to Working Bikes and was amazed at not only the wide selection of bikes, but also the affordable prices. After browsing the store floor and finding what we liked, we approached the front desk and spoke with Kiki, who demonstrated a clear passion for biking. She was very helpful, funny and knowledgeable. I would definitely recommend coming here for those who are searching for a bike!

Went in as a complete newb to the road bike world. Staff was crazy friendly, open, not judgemental. Hooked me up with great bike, threw on some new tires, and made sure everything was adjusted for my height. Great affordable price, half the starting price of other shops. Highly recommend checking them out!!

this place is amazing......i bought a bike here and the staff was not only accomodating, but made sure my bike was the way i wanted it. they do their best to fit the bike to you, and for pricing on a used bike, they are pretty darn good when you have shopped around for used bikes and want a second bike, in no hurry, and find that not only do they have the best prices, best service, but also a staff that actually knows bikes.

There's so many "cool" things about this place but I've been going here for years and every used bike I buy doesn't last me a year without a major issue occurring and the mechanics are all completely incompetent. I can't, in good faith, recommend this place to anyone for anything anymore.

I called working bikes on Sunday in hopes of finding my 2.5 year old girl a bike. Not only did they have a perfect sized bike for our daughter but the folks working there had it all ready, air in the tires and training wheels on before we arrived. The staff is truly helpful and you can tell they are working for a purpose. Great Chicago Business with Great Chicago People working there. I highly suggest buying a bike or donating your old one. Big Ups Working Bikes! Thanks again

When it comes to great service at a very low price this place is second to none ! I brought my bike in because of my brakes going out on me and my chain in bad condition. These guys were fast and efficient took them less than an hour to get me out of there. They also were polite and answered all of my questions. Very informative staff, and all goes to a great cause , I love the fact they donate to less fortunate individuals around the world.

Wonderful place. Got my first bike here and it changed the way I live. They really started me out with quality - I've had it for 8 years and with regular tune-ups, she's as good as ever. This old Trek Antelope has paid for itself a hundred times over. Go check out Working Bikes. Everyone I've ever pointed their way has been satisfied.

Using bicycles as almost a currency, they have volunteers fix them and ship them overseas, provide lightly used bikes for sale and to those in need of transportation to jobs, and train people how to fix them. Bicycles at the center of ways of helping people.

I'm a volunteer there every Wednesday fixing up bikes, tearing down clunkers for their parts and loading bikes in shipping containers for donation to countries where a bike may be the key to employment and a better life.

The economic model is pretty straight forward: Collect bikes, fix the good ones up for sale, tear down the poor condition ones, store the others, and use the money from sales to fund the shipping. It costs about $5,000 per container that can carry several hundred bicycles.

And, yes, they are a full line bicycle repair shop with accessories. Bring yours in for a tune up, safety check, new tires/tubes, etc.

OMG I just had a best experience here. Second time I have gotten a bicycle at Working Bikes and I never want to go anywhere else. Not only are the salespeople knowledgeable and helpful, but they are also SUPER patient and sweet. As someone who doesn't know a whole lot about bikes they made me feel very welcome. Kiki helped me and she was the bomb! Helped me find what I was looking for and even stayed late to help me change out my bike rack and seat and make sure I had a bike I was happy with. Just overjoyed, and spent less than $200 on a bike that I know is going to last me and work well with commuting around the city. Thank you Working Bikes!!!

I came in about two weeks ago, and while I did not end up purchasing a bike... The service here is phenomenal. Kiki/Keke was with me for at least an hour trying to help me find the right bike for someone of my height. We must have gone through close to 10 bikes and she was super chill and understanding about what I liked and disliked about for each bike we tried. We also struggled a bit because trying to find the right fit for various bikes was difficult. Still, this shop is amazingly friendly and it's got a very chill vibe. I highly recommend it if you're a noob and need help trying to find something you like. The only reason I did not make a purchase was because again finding the right fit is tricky, but I really felt listened to and did not feel pressured to make a purchase. The intent I felt was helpful one in which they wanted to help me find, what styles and what measurements I should be looking for in the future.

Why in the world would I take the western bus from the north side all the way down here to get my bike fixed? Because it's worth it. Love the idea of this place. donating bikes to other countries that need them. Volunteers working. Just a really cool place with really cool people. I'd volunteer myself if I wasn't so far away, but I bought my last two bikes here and will keep coming back. They really take care of you.

Due to covid19, we were unable to walk around a pick a bike for my son. Instead we purchased from the website. Made a couple of calls before purchasing and the staff was always patient and nice. When we pick up my son bike (curb side pick up) they had the bike ready and gave us some instructions. Don't waste your time at places, just buy from working bikes. Be safe everyone.

Bought a green old school refurbished schwinn cruiser (with an air horn!) for a mere $140 and it's been turning heads on the daily. They're a busy shop, so bring your patience, but the bikes are just as awesome as their business model.

This place is outstanding. If you are looking for a solid commuter bike or urban workhorse, you can find it here. If you are into vintage bikes, they also have beautiful classic road bikes restored to perfect working condition. I came here looking for parts for a bike I'm building. I found two sets of excellent Shimano SPDs, bottle cages, SKS fenders, and a nice seat that I took out the door for only a small fraction of what these things would cost new (or even take-offs on ebay). The staff is very helpful and knowledgeable. But BE PATIENT - they are volunteers, and the place can be very busy, especially in the warmer months.

It's cool they donate so many bikes. Really nice people working there. The bikes are very overpriced compared to what you'll find at other shops or on CraigsList. We tried to trade in a bike for credit towards a new one and they weren't willing to do that (something they should consider because other shops do that). A guy in the shop who goes there a lot told us not to get work done there because they charge a lot more than other places. We got a bike and there were issues with the tire falling off. Almost got in an accident twice while riding it. We weren't able to return it, we had to get in store credit and get a different bike. The bike selection is a lot of older bikes that are heavier and don't look great. Maybe I've just always had good luck at other bike shops and gotten good deals on CraigsList, but shopping here was not a great experience and I won't go back. I guess it's fine if you don't mind paying a lot of money for an old bike that's going to fall apart and is dangerous to ride.
