Coming from the South where women are born to make...

Coming from the South where women are born to make biscuits, I am hard pressed to find a biscuit maker that can do what is being done here at Word of Mouth. Light, fluffy, HUGE, deliciously flavorful - whether you eat it under gravy, with butter and jam, or alone, they do not disappoint.

We visited WoM recently and everything was INCREDIBLE. The cinnamon roll "pancake" was a work of genius and The Flying Biscuit is what dreams are made of. Thankfully we are just visiting Salem for a few days because otherwise we would need rolled out on a gurney for eating all the food.

Do not listen to EVEN ONE negative comment on this page (or any other). This is a true neighborhood gem where the food is real and real good. Sure you're going to wait for a table and sure they may be busy, but it is such a special place, with obvious culinary talent for comfort food. A chain restaurant can't even compare. We will definitely be back!

This "little house" restaurant is a blend of down-home comfort food, genuine culinary skills, and made-from-scratch ingredients. There is often a 1 to 2 hour wait, which should be considered a "pro" not a "con"; why wouldn't you want to eat where everyone else does too? Your best bet to seat quickly is to arrive within the first hour of their opening (7a to 8a).

This review reflects their breakfast offerings, though lunch is also served and (I'm sure) is equally appealing.

The atmosphere and service are warm and inviting, with just the right amount of quirk.

Ideal for parties of 2 to 4, groups of bigger size would do best to make another choice. Or better yet, uninvite some folks - with food this good, who needs friends? I joke. Sort of.

Word of mouth has one of the best breakfasts in town. I always order the plate of love, creme brulee French toast with eggs and a side of veggie hash, busy so many of their items are good. At least 60-75% of my visits, they have given my party a "random act of yummy-ness"--one of their menu items a la carte--be it a cinnamon roll pancake, a piece of creme brulee French toast, or a biscuits and gravy. The service if impeccable, the food is tasty and unique, the space is quaint, but the wait... Oh the wait... That part is rough. But they've made some improvements! You can put your name on the list and you can check the website to see where you are in line. Then, they give you a 15 minute window to get back once it's your turn. So the wait is worth it.

The garden omelet was over cooked and dry. The pork fried steak and eggs were excellent. The mimosa was fantastic. I will not order an omelette there again. Now that I think about it, the last time I ate there I had the same experience. Over cooked eggs are horrible and the smell is not pleasant.
