Women's Audio Mission: Empowering Women in Music Production and Recording Arts
Women's Audio Mission (WAM) is a nonprofit organization that aims to empower women and girls in music production and the recording arts. Founded in 2003, WAM has been at the forefront of promoting gender equality in the music industry by providing training, mentorship, and job opportunities for women.
The mission of WAM is to change the face of sound by increasing the number of women working in audio engineering, sound design, music production, and other related fields. The organization believes that diversity is essential for creativity and innovation to thrive. By empowering women with skills and knowledge, WAM hopes to create a more inclusive industry where everyone can contribute their unique talents.
WAM offers various programs designed to support women at different stages of their careers. The Girls on the Mic program provides free after-school classes for girls aged 8-18 who want to learn about music production. The program teaches basic recording techniques using digital audio workstations (DAWs), microphones, mixers, and other equipment commonly used in professional studios.
For college students or recent graduates who are interested in pursuing a career in audio engineering or sound design, WAM offers an immersive training program called SoundChannel. This six-month program provides hands-on experience working on real-world projects such as recording live concerts or producing podcasts.
WAM also partners with companies such as Dolby Laboratories and Pixar Animation Studios to provide job opportunities for its members. Through these partnerships, WAM members have worked on major film productions such as Toy Story 4 and Incredibles 2.
In addition to its training programs and job placement services, WAM also advocates for policy changes that promote gender equality in the music industry. For example, it supports legislation like AB-5 (California Assembly Bill) which aims to protect gig workers' rights by classifying them as employees rather than independent contractors.
Overall, Women's Audio Mission is an inspiring organization that has made significant strides towards promoting gender equality in music production and recording arts industries. Its commitment towards empowering women through education programs has helped many aspiring female engineers achieve their dreams while breaking down barriers along the way.#changingthefaceofsound
