Wolf Haven International: A Sanctuary for Wolves
Wolf Haven International is a sanctuary that has been nationally recognized for its efforts in conserving and protecting wolves and their habitat. The sanctuary is located in Tenino, Washington, and it provides a safe haven for captive-born and displaced wolves.
The mission of Wolf Haven International is to promote the survival of wolves by providing them with a natural environment where they can thrive. The sanctuary also aims to educate people about the importance of wolves in our ecosystem.
History
Wolf Haven International was founded in 1982 by Steve Smith, who was passionate about saving wolves from extinction. At that time, there were only a few hundred gray wolves left in the wild due to hunting and habitat loss.
Steve Smith started rescuing captive-born wolf pups from fur farms across North America. He raised them at his home until they were old enough to be transferred to larger enclosures at Wolf Haven International.
Over time, more wolf pups were rescued from fur farms or other situations where they could not survive on their own. Today, Wolf Haven International has over 60 resident wolves living on its 82-acre property.
Sanctuary Life
The residents of Wolf Haven International are divided into packs based on their personalities and social dynamics. Each pack has its own enclosure with plenty of space for the animals to roam around freely.
The enclosures are designed to mimic the natural environment that wild wolves would live in. They have trees, rocks, hills, dens, and other features that provide shelter and stimulation for the animals.
The staff at Wolf Haven International takes great care to ensure that all residents receive proper nutrition and medical attention when needed. They also provide enrichment activities such as hiding food or toys around the enclosure so that the animals can use their natural instincts to find them.
Education
One of the main goals of Wolf Haven International is education about wolf conservation issues. The sanctuary offers tours throughout the year where visitors can learn about wolf behavior, ecology, history, mythology as well as current conservation efforts being made worldwide.
In addition to tours offered onsite at Tenino location ,the organization also offers educational programs online through webinars which cover topics such as “Wolves & Climate Change” , “Wolves & Mythology” etc .
Wolf Advocacy Program
Another important aspect of Wolf haven international’s work is advocacy . Through this program ,they work towards promoting policies which support coexistence between humans & wildlife . This includes advocating against trophy hunting , trapping etc .
