Why me? UK: Empowering Victims and Perpetrators through Restorative Justice
Have you ever been a victim of a crime? Have you ever felt powerless, violated, and traumatized by the experience? Have you ever wished for justice that goes beyond punishment and retribution?
If the answer to those questions is yes, then Why me? UK might be able to help. This innovative organization is dedicated to promoting Restorative Justice as a way of healing and transforming individuals, communities, and society as a whole.
Restorative Justice is an approach that focuses on repairing harm caused by crime or conflict. It involves bringing together victims, offenders, and other stakeholders in a safe and respectful setting where they can communicate their needs, feelings, and perspectives. The goal is not only to hold offenders accountable for their actions but also to address the underlying causes of crime such as trauma, addiction, poverty or inequality.
Why me? UK has been at the forefront of Restorative Justice advocacy since 2008. They have worked with thousands of people affected by crime or conflict across England and Wales. Their services are free for victims who meet certain criteria such as being over 18 years old or having experienced serious harm.
The process starts with an assessment interview where trained facilitators listen to the victim's story and explain what Restorative Justice entails. If both parties agree to participate voluntarily (offenders cannot be forced), they will be prepared separately for the face-to-face meeting which usually takes place in a neutral venue like a community center or prison.
During this meeting (also known as conference), victims have the opportunity to ask questions about why they were targeted; express how they were affected physically, emotionally or financially; share their hopes for the future; receive apologies from offenders if appropriate; receive compensation if agreed upon; make suggestions on how similar incidents can be prevented in the future.
Offenders have also their chance to speak about what led them to commit the crime; acknowledge the harm they caused; express remorse and regret; offer to make amends or seek help for their issues. They may also receive feedback from victims on how their actions impacted them and what they can do to repair the damage.
The conference is facilitated by trained professionals who ensure that everyone follows the ground rules of respect, confidentiality, and safety. They also provide emotional support before, during, and after the meeting.
Research has shown that Restorative Justice can have many benefits for victims such as:
- Feeling heard, validated, and empowered
- Reducing fear of future victimization
- Improving mental health outcomes
- Increasing satisfaction with justice system
- Lowering desire for revenge
For offenders, Restorative Justice can lead to:
- Greater understanding of consequences of their actions
- Increased empathy towards victims
- Reduced likelihood of reoffending
- Improved relationships with family or community
Restorative Justice is not a panacea nor a substitute for traditional criminal justice processes. It does not guarantee forgiveness or reconciliation nor does it work in every case. However, it offers a unique opportunity for those who are willing to engage in dialogue and take responsibility for their actions.
Why me? UK believes that Restorative Justice should be available to all victims who want it regardless of where they live or what type of crime was committed against them. They also advocate for more education and awareness-raising about Restorative Justice among policymakers, practitioners, media outlets as well as general public.
