Western North Carolina AIDS Project (WNCAP) is a non-profit organization that provides HIV/AIDS prevention and case management services in Asheville and Western North Carolina. The organization was founded in 1986, at the height of the AIDS epidemic, to provide support and care for those affected by HIV/AIDS.
WNCAP's mission is to prevent new cases of HIV/AIDS through education, outreach, and testing. They also provide comprehensive case management services for those living with HIV/AIDS, including access to medical care, housing assistance, transportation assistance, mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment referrals and more.
One of WNCAP's core values is harm reduction. This means that they believe in meeting people where they are at without judgment or shame. They offer syringe access programs which help reduce the spread of blood-borne diseases like HIV and hepatitis C among people who inject drugs.
In addition to their prevention efforts, WNCAP also offers hepatitis C treatment education. Hepatitis C is a viral infection that can cause liver damage if left untreated. WNCAP provides education on how to prevent hepatitis C transmission as well as information on available treatments.
WNCAP has been recognized nationally for their work in the fight against HIV/AIDS. In 2019 they were awarded a grant from Gilead Sciences Inc., which allowed them to expand their PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) program. PrEP is a medication that can be taken daily by individuals who are at high risk for contracting HIV but want to remain negative.
