Washington Autism Alliance and Advocacy: Empowering Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. It is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder that affects individuals differently. Some may have difficulty with social interactions while others may struggle with sensory processing issues.
The Washington Autism Alliance and Advocacy (WAAA) is a non-profit organization that aims to empower individuals with ASD and their families through education, advocacy, and support services. Founded in 2007 by parents of children with autism, WAAA has been at the forefront of providing resources for families affected by ASD in Washington State.
WAAA's mission is to improve the lives of individuals affected by ASD through advocacy for access to healthcare services, education programs, employment opportunities, housing options and community inclusion. The organization provides information on evidence-based treatments for ASD such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Speech Therapy and Occupational Therapy.
One of WAAA's core programs is its Family Support Program which offers individualized support services to families affected by ASD.
