I got in touch with the VOA on South Broad St (which doesn't appear to exist anymore, which is for the best since every time I went there the receptionist was browsing Facebook and flicking her nails) for assistance in getting housing because I was about to be homeless. Big mistake. The average response time between when you contact them and when they respond is about a week. Not great if you're about to be homeless in the Southern heat with your dog (my best friend). They had a program that would grant qualified veterans with first month's rent and security deposit; I'd be a fool not to take advantage of it being as broke as I was. Now, unfortunately, the amount offered for both of those was not made apparent up front, so there goes a week or two of wasted time and also the realization that they're funneling everyone they "help" into the crime-ridden NOLA East. I moved to New Orleans for a new job after the Army, but I had no money for relocation expenses or anything like that; I just drove here with the clothes on my back and my dog because it was my only option.
I spent about six months in an extended stay motel thanks to some ad hoc charity from family (who most definitely couldn't afford it) after being homeless for a while living out of my car while I worked, the cheapest in town but still nearly double what I'm currently paying in rent per month. I was only doing this because I was waiting on them to either reply to an email, "inspect" an apartment (if you're already providing this service, then why haven't these properties been vetted first, to avoid wasting time and money?), or just plain in the dark until the next time the case manager got in touch. There were two week gaps on a regular basis. Hoop after hoop, excuse after excuse. It became a running joke at work that the only thing the VOA was good at doing was spitting in the face of veterans.
Well no thanks to the VOA, I did eventually get an apartment after over half a year of waiting on them to do what they said they would do; eventually they just stopped responding to calls and emails. Literally. I got one voicemail from someone asking to call back to leave feedback. So I called back. Several times. Guess who picked up the phone? Literally no one. I could have saved so much money (literally thousands of dollars) if I'd known they were just out to string me along. This organization is an absolute joke when it comes to assisting transitioning veterans. Instead contact your fellow area veterans, go to the VA, etc. You could probably find more assistance at the nearest gas station than you could here, and to me, frankly, that is unforgivable. If I could give a negative star rating I would.
Great Customer Service! The receptionist was Awsome...Thank You!
