Voices from War: Empowering Veterans through Creative Writing
Voices from War is a non-profit organization that provides creative writing workshops for veterans and their family members. Founded in 2013 by Kara Krauze, a writer and educator, Voices from War aims to empower veterans to share their stories through the written word.
The organization offers both in-person and online workshops led by published writers who are also veterans or family members of veterans. The workshops cover various genres of writing, including fiction, memoir, essays, and poetry. Participants have the opportunity to read and discuss works related to war and conflict as well as receive feedback on their own writing.
Voices from War believes that creative writing can be a powerful tool for healing and self-expression. By sharing their experiences through storytelling, veterans can connect with others who have had similar experiences while also gaining a sense of catharsis.
In addition to its workshops, Voices from War hosts public readings featuring the work of its participants. These events provide an opportunity for the wider community to hear directly from veterans about their experiences.
The organization also partners with other groups working with veterans such as Warrior Writers and Combat Paper NJ. Through these collaborations, Voices from War seeks to create a supportive network for veteran writers.
Voices from War has received recognition for its work including grants from organizations such as Poets & Writers Magazine's Readings & Workshops program and The New York Community Trust's Veterans Mental Health Coalition.
