I went to see the Dreamgirls production on Sunday July 31st. This was a wonderful Off-Broadway reproduction of the movie. I would have given this 5 stars but there were a couple of things that made me have strong reservations. I would have liked the gift shop to stay open after the play was over to purchase items but instead it closed shortly after intermission. Also in the balcony the guards do not have flashlights and the steps are carpeted and uneven which makes it very hard to navigate. I would have liked to see even tap lights on the sides of the steps to help people get around in the balcony. I understand that it is a historic theater so the seats are small but the intermission was too late into the program so you sat uncomfortably for a long period of time, I heard a lot of complaints in the crowd. I love the set I loved the costumes I love the singers (the character Jimmy was amazing). My favorite set change was how they used people and inanimate objects as the red carpet very creative . In summary it was a great program and I plan to see a full production this year.

Great clean venue for small theater projects. The staff is exceptional. I was delighted to have a selection of brand name liquor at the refreshment stand! The bathrooms were modernized and clean.

Great venue. Comfy seats, good viewing angles, quality sound, pleasant staff, decent prices. I saw the "Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time" there, and if this is the level of talent they are bringing, then sign me up! Richmond is lucky to have this place.

Virginia Rep consistently raises the bar for quality theater within the Richmond Community. They always have a show for everyone, via their three different theaters and are also bringing new works to the table. I love being a part of all they do and am very excited to see how Nathanial Shaw, the new Artistic Director is already pushing the limits and bringing fresh shows, faces and a new feel to the work being done.

The theater itself is beautiful, strong performances in Dreamgirls with a great band and terrific lighting. The valet parking situation was a little confusing, with a fairly long wait after the show. Concession options are basically the snack items I throw in my kids' lunches.

So fun. There isn't a bad seat in the house. Sound is hood. Seats are comfortable for an old theater. Bathrooms were clean. Will definitely be back and will add a nearby restaurant to our plans.

Oh! I was so impressed with the whole experience. The staff is so pleasant, kind, and helpful! The theater is lovely. The cast was phenomenal. This is the first time I have seen "WEST SIDE STORY". The orchestra did a wonderful job. The music was beautiful! There's no way to describe this cast. They were passionate in their delivery. The acting was flawless as was the dancing and singing. They have very professional singers and their voices blended seamlessly. This will not be the last time for me to come to a performance. The last scene brought me to tears, and they received a well deserved standing ovation. There is just no way to describe the beauty in their voices, the colorful costumes, the perfection in their dance moves, and the overall breathless execution of the entire play. Bravo!

We came to watch Mary Poppins on the preview night and it was absolutely wonderful! We were in the Richmond area for a job training for only four weeks and I'm sad I won't be able to return regularly. The theater was great, the area downtown seemed to be well worth exploring. If I'm in the area again I'll definitely check to see what's going on!

We've seen many shows on Broadway. Maybe dozens. But once again the Virginia Repertory Theater surpassed all our expectation. There were more stellor singers in this one production of The Wiz than in several typical Broadway Productions combined. We wondered afterwards how they will manage to sustain the level of energy and enthusiasm we witnessed, particularly on days where there will be two performances. Congratulations to the entire cast, crew and pit orchestra of The Wiz, we fully expect to see most of you on Broadway someday, if Broadway is lucky!!
To the pit Orchestra, well done there are so many exposed parts for all the musicians it's worth seeing the production just to hear how masterfully they handle these erratic and difficult parts. I'd especially like to give a nod to the french horn player who played in the pit for the July 6th evening performance. As the performance progressed she revealed herself to possess a wonderfully full, and sweet, very European, French horn sound. Dennis Brain would've been proud.

So glad it is close and located in the heart RVA! The plays that Rep promotes are amazing! Seating is great and the views of the stage are good! Very well restored theater. Lack of restrooms being it is such an old theater....so don't wait to long to go or you won't make it.

We have been patrons of Virginia Repertory Theater for a long time and feel privileged to have such a wonderful, professional theater company in Richmond. Not only do they offer quality shows with diverse topics and fabulous talent, they provide stellar educational opportunities for kids that my son has been taking advantage of for years. The theater is a Richmond landmark surrounded by excellent restaurants, shops and galleries and has helped revitalize that area of the city. Love, love, love!

We are blessed to live in an area with such high quality regional theater. The acting in every performance is top notch with fine casting and great direction. The sets, lighting and costumes are never amateurish as can happen in some local productions. Most recently we saw Once at the November Theater. Not only was the staging and acting excellent, but the music was worthy of the Tony winning show. With good sight lines and facilities at the November, fine performances and decent prices, theater at Virginia Rep is always memorable.

My first visit was to a play entitled "John" which was rated really well but was quite the opposite. For $30 a piece I wouldn't have thought we'd be sitting in metal folding chairs with a cushion. The seats were really cramped and it was really warm in the smaller theater. I say smaller because we found out that there was a larger nicer theater beside us. I just wish I had known more going in. It was not the best experience... maybe it would have been better had the play been better.

Richmond's signature theatre produces consistently excellent musicals, recent Broadway and Off-Broadway fare, and employs top-notch talent from stage to box office. Located downtown, it has inspired a neighborhood resurgence of restaurants, hotels, art galleries, and other smaller, excellent theatre fare. A cultural linchpin.

Great theater in a really good location. Barely any "truly bad" seats in the House! They usually have really good productions here. Wasn't "in love" with the recent production of West Side Story... It wasn't bad really, but I had a couple of issues:
Considering W.S.S. is mostly dancing, I think the dancing was only ok. Especially the main "fight"... Anyone who knows the story knows that the entire show is a buildup to the "fight." But, I was a little underwhelmed when the dancing want super sharp and crisp. Also, and THIS IS JUST MY OPINION... This is a story about a turf was between the Whites and the Puerto Ricans in NY... So I'm having trouble figuring out why Casting couldn't locate more actual Latin actors to play the Latin roles. It's one thing to have a Puerto Rican gang of 10 guys, but a couple of them are White guys playing the part. It's another thing completely up have a Puerto Rican gang of 10 While guys, but only a couple of them are actually Latin. It's like if they'd casted 100 While guys to play Blacks in the movie Black Panther... Sometimes, there's nothing wrong with casting based on race if the story calls for it. Just sayin'!
But this is not the norm for this theater. It's a solid visit, and though I have some gripes with one production, I'm typically very pleased here. Ticket prices are reasonable, and there are plenty of places in the area to have dinner or a drink around the show.
Give this place a chance! I'd love to see it grow in popularity even more.
