Victory Electric Cooperative Association: Keeping the Lights on for Our Members
Electricity is an essential part of our daily lives. We use it to power our homes, businesses, and industries. However, have you ever wondered where your electricity comes from? How it is generated and distributed to your home or office? If you live in Southwest Kansas, chances are that your electricity is provided by Victory Electric Cooperative Association.
Victory Electric Cooperative Association (VECA) is a locally owned electric cooperative that serves more than 40,000 members in 10 counties in Southwest Kansas. VECA was founded in 1945 by a group of farmers who wanted to bring electricity to their rural communities. Today, VECA remains true to its roots as a member-owned cooperative that provides safe, reliable and affordable electricity to its members.
As a member-owned cooperative, VECA operates differently from investor-owned utilities (IOUs) or municipal utilities. Instead of maximizing profits for shareholders or generating revenue for the city government, VECA's main goal is to serve its members' needs at the lowest possible cost. This means that any surplus revenues are returned back to the members as capital credits based on their usage.
VECA's board of trustees consists of nine elected members who represent different districts within the service area. The trustees set policies and make decisions on behalf of the membership at large. The day-to-day operations are managed by a professional staff led by CEO Shane Laws.
One of VECA's core values is safety. Safety not only means keeping employees safe but also ensuring that electrical infrastructure meets national standards and regulations set forth by organizations such as OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), NERC (North American Electric Reliability Corporation), and FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency). In addition, VECA has an active safety program that includes regular training sessions for employees and contractors.
Another important value at VECA is reliability. Electricity outages can be inconvenient at best or life-threatening at worst depending on the circumstances. That's why VECA invests heavily in maintaining its electrical infrastructure such as poles, wires transformers etc., so they can withstand extreme weather conditions like high winds or ice storms without failing.
Finally yet importantly affordability - one thing we all want when it comes down paying bills! As mentioned earlier since Victory electric cooperative association operates under non-profit model which means they don't have any shareholders so there isn't any pressure on them regarding profit maximization which results into lower rates compared with other IOUs companies operating around them!
In conclusion Victory electric cooperative association has been serving southwest Kansas since 1945 with their mission being providing safe, reliable & affordable energy services while keeping up with latest technology trends & regulations!
