Johnson is a quaint walkable town; VSC comprises most of it. Easy to get a lot of work done here as everything slowwwwwsssss dowwwwwnnnnn. Facilities are well maintained; linen service, and meals are provided so you can really hunker down on your work during your stay, yet nightly readings, open studios, and artist talks keep you from being isolated. But beware if you're there with pretentious youngins or those who believe their work peerless or those using the opportunity as vacation--there were a good number of each during my stay. And if you're a minority you will be made aware in the most awkward ways. Aside from all this if you're there to get work done you will and for that my stay was worth it.

The studio center is a wonderful place in town to see lots of cool art. I recommend looking at which artists are in/looking at the hours because it's not always open studio. Certainly, though, worth the trip. When they have open nights, there's some incredible stuff.

Vermont Studio center is a great place to work on art projects or writing for your stay of 2-4 weeks. Your experience will depend a lot of the group of people you are placed with. Unfortunately, the majority of the artists and writers during my stay were there to party and hook up- it was their big time away from work, family and significant others. I felt extremely out of place and isolated. I was able to get a lot of really wonderful work done that did benefit my career, but I tried to stay away from others after my first week.
Married men hit on me- a lot, and the staff there openly forms temporary relationships with visitors. Most were married professors and married artists. And you're stuck with these people for 4 weeks and twice a day during mealtimes.
Anyway, you may enjoy yourself. I hope you are able to connect with others on a more fulfilling level and get a lot of work done.

Great place to be inspired to make art, develop new friendships, and enjoy other creative peoples company from across the nation and the world. One of the most organized art residencies I have been to. They have visiting artists and decent food

To start, I am an artist, but am not affiliated with Vermont Studio Center. That being said, I do not feel that I can rate the program. However, I do make use of the beautiful campus. I photograph the gardens, river and falls, the bird life and other interesting subjects. I also have gone to the Open Studios held by resident artists, and have enjoyed them immensely. If you get a chance to walk their grounds with weeping willows, sculptures, and a quaint rocky beach on the Gihon River, you will agree that it is beautiful and peaceful.
