Vermont Army National Guard: Serving the Nation with Honor and Pride
The Vermont Army National Guard is a branch of the United States Army that serves as a reserve component of the US military. It is headquartered in Colchester, Vermont, and has units located throughout the state. The mission of the Vermont Army National Guard is to provide trained and ready soldiers to support national security objectives both at home and abroad.
History
The history of the Vermont Army National Guard dates back to 1764 when Ethan Allen formed a militia known as the Green Mountain Boys. During the American Revolution, these troops played a crucial role in securing victory for American forces at Fort Ticonderoga. In 1820, Vermont established its first organized militia unit known as "The Governor's Horse Guards." Over time, this unit evolved into what we know today as the Vermont Army National Guard.
In recent years, members of the Vermont Army National Guard have served in numerous conflicts including Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. They have also been called upon to assist with disaster relief efforts such as Hurricane Katrina.
Mission
The mission of the Vermont Army National Guard is twofold: to provide trained and ready soldiers for deployment overseas when called upon by federal authorities; and to assist state authorities during times of emergency or disaster.
To accomplish this mission, members of the guard receive extensive training in various areas such as combat tactics, marksmanship, first aid, leadership skills, and more. They are also equipped with state-of-the-art equipment that enables them to carry out their duties effectively.
