About Upstate forever
Upstate Forever: Protecting Land and Water in Upstate South Carolina
Upstate Forever is a Greenville-based conservation nonprofit that has been working tirelessly to protect land and water in Upstate South Carolina since 1998. The organization's mission is to promote balanced growth while preserving the natural beauty of the region for future generations.
The Upstate region of South Carolina is known for its stunning landscapes, rich history, and vibrant communities. However, rapid development and urbanization have threatened the area's natural resources, including its forests, rivers, and wildlife habitats. That's where Upstate Forever comes in.
The organization works with landowners, local governments, businesses, and other stakeholders to conserve critical lands through easements or outright purchases. These lands include forests that provide clean air and water; farms that produce food; wetlands that filter pollutants; scenic vistas that attract tourists; and wildlife habitats that support biodiversity.
Upstate Forever also advocates for policies at the local, state, and federal levels that promote smart growth practices such as compact development patterns, transportation alternatives like biking or walking trails instead of highways or roads through sensitive areas like wetlands or floodplains.
One of the most significant achievements of Upstate Forever was securing permanent protection for more than 21 miles along the Saluda River from Lake Murray Dam to Pelzer. This stretch includes some of the most beautiful scenery in South Carolina with steep cliffs rising above deep pools where anglers can catch trout year-round.
Another notable project was protecting over 1 million acres from oil drilling off our coastlines by advocating against offshore drilling which could have devastating effects on marine life as well as tourism industry which relies heavily on beaches being clean & safe places for visitors to enjoy their vacations without worrying about oil spills ruining their experience.
Upstate Forever also provides educational programs about conservation issues such as climate change impacts on our region’s ecosystems & how we can all take action towards reducing carbon emissions by using renewable energy sources like solar or wind power.
The organization's work has been recognized by numerous awards and accolades, including the prestigious Land Trust Alliance Accreditation. Upstate Forever is also a member of the South Carolina Conservation Coalition, which brings together conservation organizations from across the state to advocate for policies that protect our natural resources.
In conclusion, Upstate Forever is an essential organization that plays a vital role in protecting land and water in Upstate South Carolina. Its efforts have helped preserve some of the region's most beautiful landscapes while promoting sustainable growth practices that benefit both people and nature.
