This school is nothing like the other charter schools affiliated with University of Chicago. Their curriculum isn't the best for students who may need more assistance and academic motivation. It's more like academic boot camp. The school will make consistent phone calls to the guardian over very petty matters. The fees are ridiculous compared to what they supposedly cover (which is very little). There aren't any normal high school experiences available like basketball games, pep rallies, or homecoming. ANYTHING extra you are charged (yes it's a charter school but at UCW it's not worth it) I have heard from others that they're also displeased with the school. All along I thought it was just me. UCW is designed for A and B students, who more than likely aren't interested in ANY standard extra curricular activities and who are self taught and motivated. Unfortunately, that isn't your average high school student.

Overall, I think the school academic rigor is very much representative of the 'in network experience'. unfortunately, most CPS students who have not attended a UofC school are at a disadvantage. BUT, I'd say this is just even more of an opportunity for the parent to step and really engage with the staff. There are ways to get more help through tutoring and using the techbology as supplements. I feel we really baby our kids these days. If something is challenging, you must rise to the challenge not the reverse.

And frankly, the school curriculmn is still below the higher rankings schools in Chicago. As for extra curriculars, yes, there is room for improvement. But, I fully utilize the park district and other suburbs to fill in the gaps.

I really treasure the level of comfort in knowing my child is safe. So for what's it worth, the extra patrol by the UofC police staff is a value added trade-off for not having a drama club or top notch basket ball team.
