Was here in July 2019 and the entire place has been CLOSED for some time to be revitalized and upgraded. According to a security guard in the area, its been like this for almost 2 yrs now with no completion date set.

Its been about 10yrs since we last visited this place and even at that time there wasn't that much to see or do and was in desperate need of an overhaul. Perhaps when we return to Atlanta in 2021 the Reno's will be done. Fingers crossed

I think this used to be a really cool place, but now it's just run down and sad. Half of the shops are closed and the entire place is in a state of disrepair. The shops that are open seem to be novelty more than anything else. I've heard there are plans to redevelop the area and renovate the Underground. I hope they do because I think it could be a cool place, it's just not anymore.

We paid to park only to find out from locals that The Underground was closed down for reconstruction and some of the stores have moved to the upper level. I wish I would have knew this before paying for parking!

It's really gone down hill. You can't even go in the bathrooms they are disgusting with weird things going on inside. It seems all the businesses are getting out. It really needs to be cleaned up. It's worth just walking through really quick just to see it and say you did. Don't go to the bathroom there.

Deffinitely not the 5 points it used to be in it's hey day years ago. It used to host the world famous peach drop as well but has been sold to a private developer. We hope that it can be breathed some new life into it again. As of now it's simply a skeleton of what it used to be with minimal shops an little to attract people back to it.Two stars for what I knew it to be in the old days and what I know it can be potentially

IT WAS A GOOD DEAL.THE PLACE NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING WITH ALL THE PEOPLE ABOVE GROUND ALMOST DEMANDING THAT YOU GIVE THEM SOMETHING. THEY ASK FOR ONE THING YOU SAY NO, THEN THEY ASK FOR SOMETHING ELSE ON AND ON. I HAD TO GET UGLY WITH THIS ONE BECAUSE, HE WAS STARTING TO SCARE MY GRAND BABIES. THERE IS NOTHING THAT WILL CAUSE ME TO LUSE IT BUT, MR MAN IM TALKING BOUT WITH A QUICKNESS IF ANYONE DOES THAT. FORTUNATELY HE GOT THE MESSAGE. WHICH I WAS GLAD BECAUSE I DIDN'T HAVE TO GO TO JAIL WHILE I TOOK MY GRANDS ON VACATION.

Mall in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, quite visited by tourists and visitors. The place consists of an important basement with shops, hence its name "Underground" of another level, more to the street and outdoor hotel establishments type cafeterias. There was a little of everything shops to buy gifts, sweets, bars, games, I remember with special attention a perfumery in the basement run by a girl of Indian origin, very nice, had many colonies and perfumes. I also remember a very bright and subdued outdoor cafe with tables on the street next to the downstairs. Attention to pickpockets and thugs, there and in the area there.

About Underground Atlanta

Underground Atlanta: A Historic Transformation

Underground Atlanta is a historic landmark located in the heart of downtown Atlanta, Georgia. The four-block radius was once a bustling hub for retail and entertainment, but over time it fell into disrepair. However, with the help of visionary developers and community leaders, Underground is undergoing a transformation that will revitalize the area and create a sustainable community where people can live, work, create, and explore.

The History of Underground Atlanta

Underground Atlanta has a rich history that dates back to the 1800s. Originally known as Terminus, it was founded as the end of the Western & Atlantic Railroad line. As more railroads were built in the area, Terminus grew into a thriving transportation hub.

In 1864 during the Civil War Battle of Atlanta, much of Terminus was destroyed by Union troops. After the war ended and reconstruction began in earnest in 1865-66 many businesses moved to other parts of town leaving behind empty buildings which became storage spaces for goods such as cotton bales.

In 1969 businessman R.H. Macy purchased several blocks around Alabama Street with plans to build an underground shopping mall similar to one he had seen in Montreal Canada called Place Ville Marie . The project took years longer than expected due to financial difficulties but finally opened its doors on April 8th ,1969 with great fanfare.

For many years after its opening Underground thrived as an entertainment destination featuring restaurants like Dante's Down The Hatch (a fondue restaurant), bars like Churchill Grounds (a jazz club), shops selling everything from clothing to souvenirs ,and even an indoor amusement park called Fun Junction .

However by late 1990s Underground had fallen on hard times due to competition from suburban malls and changing consumer habits . Many businesses closed their doors or moved elsewhere leaving behind empty storefronts which attracted vagrants and crime .

The Transformation Begins

In recent years there has been renewed interest in revitalizing Underground Atlanta thanks largely due efforts by WRS Inc., who purchased most of property surrounding Five Points MARTA station including former Macy's building at Peachtree Street NE & Alabama St SW intersection which they plan convert into mixed-use development featuring apartments/condos offices retail space restaurants etc..

WRS Inc.'s vision for Underground includes creating new public spaces that will be open year-round such as parks plazas fountains etc.. They also plan on adding new residential units so people can live within walking distance from work shopping dining entertainment venues all while being connected via transit options like MARTA trains buses streetcars bike lanes pedestrian walkways etc..

One key aspect WRS Inc.'s redevelopment plan is sustainability . They are committed reducing carbon footprint through use renewable energy sources green roofs rainwater harvesting systems recycling programs etc.. This commitment not only benefits environment but also helps attract younger generations who value eco-friendly living options when choosing where they want call home .

Another important part WRS Inc.'s vision for Underground is preserving history while embracing future . They are working closely with local historians architects designers artists community leaders ensure that any changes made respect integrity character site while still making it relevant modern-day needs desires .

Conclusion

Underground Atlanta is undergoing transformation that will make it one most exciting destinations city has offer residents visitors alike . With mix old new architecture green spaces sustainable living options vibrant cultural scene there something everyone here whether you're looking work play or just explore what makes this place so special!
