I was in Cyprus for just 24 hours. My bag was stolen. I lost my British passport along with my driving license, cash and all bank cards.
The next morning I went to the British High Commission as I urgently needed to get back to the UK the same day. I arrived at the time advertised on the commission website, 7:30 am. I spoke into an intercom at the gate and was advised to call the number that was also posted on the gate from a different intercom machine, also on the gate. This call was with a contact centre based in Malaga, Spain.
I explained that I was completely stranded with no money and no ID but that just fell on deaf ears.
I wasn t expecting tea and sympathy but I find it staggering that there was no face to face interaction, that I had to get useless advice from someone on the other side of Europe and that I could not get out of one EU country to another for another four days. I found myself wondering if I d accidentally rocked up to the wrong consular office, you know, like North Korea or Congo or something. No, this was the British High Commission.
The one and only time I have needed consular assistance and, quite frankly, the support offered is utterly pathetic. If you find yourself in a similar situation, good luck. You will absolutely need it. The lesson learned here is consular assistance is pretty much non existent for UK nationals and under no circumstances should you allow your personal belongings be stolen. Go figure.
