We took a trip to Austin this past weekend and were looking for something to do with our two little ones. We love the Houston Children's Museum and the Thinkery had such great reviews we decided to try it.

It's difficult not to compare experiences but I did try to stay open minded. Overall my children had a great time. However, I was not as impressed as I hoped to be.

My biggest complaint is that there is not a little cafe inside. We had to leave for lunch which wasted time and was inconvenient.

The infant area felt a little dirty. There weren't many toys for the little ones. There were some structures for them to crawl through but not much for them to do in that area. There is a neat little hanging cocoon that kids can crawl into but the whole underside was covered in a layer of grime.

The indoor water area was a big hit with my 4 year old. Waterproof bibs were provided but his shoes and pants were soaked. We did have a change of clothes for him so I would definitely recommend parents pack and plan in advance.

There was an area for kids to play upstairs with pool noodles and structures to crawl through. This area needed some attention. I had to sweep a hairball out of the way so my baby didn't eat it. The noodles that kids were playing with here were falling apart and felt dirty.

Fun for the kids. I'm still a kid so I enjoyed it as well. Tons of science based activities sneaking in learning and making it fun. Water, air, light, food, it's all crammed in there. Make sure the kids eat before you go. They have vending machines but no real food and you're going to be there a few hours. The playscape alone is going to eat up half of that. I'm not sure if adults are allowed on it so I didn't give it a go, but I wanted to. Fun for all though otherwise.

My son and I needed a day for ourselves and this was the best location for that. It was also super affordable when they have the 5 dollar special for Baby Bloomers. There was so many things to do. We got there at 9am and didn't leave till noon. My son had a blast! I recommend it for all kids.

Came with my two year old son while on vacation from Houston. I was pleasantly surprised on the amount of activities they had to offer. I feel like kids of any age can find something fun to do. Parking is convenient, and I can definitely see us coming back if we are in the area again.

We are from San Antonio and our museum has a lot more activities for older children. The Thinkery seems best suited for 8 and under. It's a nice place, wish there were more things to do.

Tip: The first weekend of the month, any Bank of America debit/credit card holder gets in free. Thank you, Dominic at the front desk for that information.

Best $24 spent - entry for 1 adult, 1 kid (kids under 2 are free). So much to see and do, we were there for over 2 hours, but didn't get to see everything. We will definitely be back.

Some features: water area, playground, grocery store, test kitchen/experiments, reading nook, light lab, engineering/math, art area - full STEAM ahead!

About Thinkery

Thinkery: Austin's Home for Science and Family Fun

Thinkery is a unique museum located in Austin, Texas that offers an interactive and educational experience for children and families. Formerly known as the Austin Children's Museum, Thinkery has evolved into a place where science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) come together to inspire curiosity and creativity.

At Thinkery, visitors can explore over 40 hands-on exhibits that encourage learning through play. From the "Spark Shop" where kids can tinker with tools to create their own inventions to the "Kitchen Lab" where they can experiment with food science, there is something for everyone at this innovative museum.

One of the most popular exhibits at Thinkery is the "Currents" exhibit which allows visitors to create their own circuits using wires and batteries. This exhibit teaches children about electricity in a fun and engaging way. Another favorite exhibit is "Innovators' Workshop" which encourages creativity by providing materials such as cardboard boxes, tape, scissors etc., allowing kids to build whatever they imagine.

In addition to its permanent exhibits, Thinkery also hosts special events throughout the year such as summer camps for kids of all ages. These camps offer hands-on activities that focus on STEAM subjects like robotics or coding.

Thinkery also offers programs specifically designed for toddlers called “Little Thinkers”. These programs are designed to introduce young children (ages 0-3) to STEAM concepts through play-based activities like sensory exploration or music-making.

The museum’s mission is not only about providing fun experiences but also about promoting education in STEAM fields. The staff at Thinkery believes that by exposing children early on in life to these subjects it will help them develop critical thinking skills necessary for success later on in life.

Thinkery has received numerous awards including being named one of Forbes’ Top 12 Children’s Museums in America. It has also been recognized by local publications such as Austin Monthly who named it “Best Place To Take Kids” multiple times.

Overall, if you're looking for a fun-filled day out with your family while learning something new along the way then look no further than Thinkery! With its interactive exhibits and engaging programs catering from toddlers up until teenagers - there's truly something here for everyone!
