Small , interesting and very important. Don't miss the ME=WE work
Museum galleries are closed while under renovation for the next 3 years but you can visit various instillations by checking out their website. Just a heads up for anyone trying to visit in the near future.
This is a fantastic museum that definitely deserves more visitors. The culture and art of Harlem is truly displayed in this space. It's also a very instagramable location.
I enjoyed the exhibit although it is small. It focused on african and spanish art in various media formats. I enjoyed... because it gave me a sense of NYC hip hop culture, 80s...and was thought provoking on various topics. The gift shop is an area that can be improved. They did not have some of the key exhibitors latest works (books) available. I highly recommend if you are the area... nominal fee/ donation accepted and the staff is very friendly and helpful.
The installations and peices are beautiful but quite abstract. We were not only out of towners but out-of-countryers, as appreciative as we were, the nuance must have been lost on us. Still worth the visit and exploring!
Excellent place to go to see art from known and unknown harlem artists.
The Studio Museum in Harlem generally offers a fascinating multiplex perspective on African and African American life for those who are open to it. We didn't get to see much, as the exhibits are being packed for moving out of the building, which is going to be torn down; a new, gorgeous building is planned, and we look forward to seeing it in the future! For people considering visiting this museum, check the website for information, as exhibits will be available in nearby locations beginning in May 2018. The museum store alone is well worth a visit! It and the small amount we were able to see let us know this is a fabulous museum to which we will plan another visit.
As for the perspective that the museum is located in "a dangerous neighborhood" shared by one reviewer; I disagree. That comment is incorrect, and, frankly, it sounds racist. We walked all over that neighborhood completely safely, going first to the museum, then to Best Market Harlem, and then to Lee Lee's Bakery. We were never bothered--and I'll bet that other reviewer was never bothered, either. My husband and I were struck by how alive Harlem feels--a wonderful energy and spirit permeates the entire area. Go with an open mind--you won't regret it!
Really enjoyed this with artistic and thought provoking exhibits on three levels. Some but not all items make strong social commentary that should make one reflect. They told us they will close in 10 days for over a year to knock down and rebuild a larger museum facility on the same plot.
